The Joy of a Nursing Home Door Decorating Competition
2024-12-19
When Connie Miller, a 78-year-old resident of Edgewood Heights, Pennsylvania, heard that her nursing home would be hosting a door decorating competition, she was eager to take part. With the help of her granddaughter, Kelsie Cloak, who has a talent for crafting, they set out to create a unique and eye-catching door.
Bringing the Vision to Life
After brainstorming ideas, Kelsie Cloak, 27, joined her grandmother. With supplies already at hand from her side business of painting banners and other items, they gathered at the nursing home. "We stopped at Dollar General to get some tinsel for the scarf to add a touch of color," Cloak recalls. Together, they spent about five hours working on the project, which included having lunch and enjoying each other's company.Details that Made it Special
After two and a half hours of hard work, the final result was a masterpiece. A picture of Miller's face was printed onto a drawing of a woman dancing with a candy cane. They paid close attention to every detail, using cotton balls and jewels on the Santa hat and stockings, and a wreath for the scarf. The banner read "North Pole Dancer, Connie Lou Who" in bold red paint. When Miller saw the finished door, her reaction was priceless. She laughed with joy, even commenting that she wished her picture had makeup. So, Kelsie added some fake eyelashes to make her feel better. The people in the nursing home and the workers loved it and got a great laugh. The Viral Videos
While crafting together, Kelsie decided to film some videos as a fun memory. She posted them on TikTok and was amazed by the response. The videos quickly went viral, amassing more than 700,000 views and hundreds of comments. Almost every comment was positive, and everyone was rooting for grandma. Cloak's family sat around and read the comments, laughing at how funny they were. It was a wonderful way to share Miller's funny personality with the world.Winning the Competition
On December 17th, Cloak informed PEOPLE that the results were in, and her grandmother had won first place. Miller used to work at the nursing home and was the first nursing administrator when it opened. The building holds a special place in her heart, and it's clear that she feels at home there. Cloak is grateful to have such a wonderful grandma. She hopes people can see the importance of visiting grandparents and doing fun things with them. That day, they didn't tell Miller they were coming, and the pure joy on her face when they walked in said it all. It's the little moments that matter, and they are happy to spend so much time with her.
