Bearded Dragon Becomes Beloved Classroom Pet, Transforming School Culture

At Chartiers Valley Primary School, a unique four-legged reptile has captured the hearts of students and staff alike. Librarian Becky Forkner's family pet, a 1-year-old bearded dragon affectionately known as "Library Lizzie," has become a beloved fixture in the school, contributing to a positive and nurturing environment for the entire community.

Bringing Joy and Learning to the Classroom

A Surprising Classroom Addition

What started as a one-day visit to meet the students has turned into a daily occurrence, as Forkner and her daughter, Kate, a second-grader, transport Lizzie to and from school each day. The school community quickly fell in love with the unexpected classroom pet, and a schoolwide party was held in May to celebrate Lizzie's first birthday.

Improving Behavior and Social Skills

Lizzie's presence in the school has had a profound impact on the students. As a reward system, students who demonstrate good behavior are given the opportunity to spend time with the reptile, fostering a sense of responsibility and positive reinforcement. Additionally, Lizzie has helped students develop social skills and empathy, as they learn to interact with the animal in a gentle and accepting manner.

Lizzie's presence has also sparked a newfound excitement for learning among the students. First-grader Jack Hnat expressed his amazement at being able to see Lizzie, and student Travis Moran shared that interacting with the bearded dragon has him eager to learn more about reptiles and their care. Forkner believes that Lizzie's presence helps make the library, which can be an intimidating space for some students, more welcoming and engaging.

Forkner explains that Lizzie's calming presence and the students' genuine affection for her have helped create a safe and nurturing environment within the school. The librarian notes that Lizzie's ability to connect with students, regardless of their background or academic performance, has been a valuable asset in fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Expanding Lizzie's Role

As Lizzie's popularity continues to grow, Forkner is exploring new ways to integrate the bearded dragon into the school's activities. Ideas include creating a social media page where Lizzie can "post" book recommendations and other reading-related content, further engaging students and promoting literacy.
