Lizzo's Social Media Odyssey: From Break to Lawsuits
2024-12-20
In an era where social media dominates our lives, Lizzo's journey offers a unique perspective. She addressed the significant social media break she took in 2023 during an appearance on Keke Palmer's podcast 'Baby, This Is Keke Palmer'. The "Water Me" singer revealed a "very toxic relationship with the internet", a revelation that sheds light on the darker side of fame.
Impact of Losing 150,000 Followers
In an interview that aired on Thursday, Dec. 19, Lizzo spoke about how losing 150,000 followers in one day affected her. She said, "I was like, Oh, wow. This is the part of fame that you unknowingly sign up for." Lizzo continued, emphasizing that people now believe anything bad about her just because she's famous. "They can't believe that you're actually boring and chill and nice." She questioned those who unfollowed her so quickly, asking, "But if you unfollowed me that quickly, were you even a fan?" Lizzo made it clear that she wasn't doing the interview for the 150,000 people who unfollowed her but for her true fans who have stood by her side.Social Media Break and Its Effects
Lizzo took a social media break from August 2023 to January 2024. She explained that anything she saw online was either posted by her team or a quick post she made and then quickly put her phone away. She avoided the "jokes," "memes" and "discourse" surrounding her. "When I see things about me now, or if even if I see a word that looks like my name, I get physically unwell, and I can't take it. So I have a very toxic relationship with the internet now," she said. She added that pulling out was very healthy for her and suggested that everyone do it for a while.Addressing the Lawsuits
Elsewhere in the interview, Lizzo addressed the lawsuits filed against her. In August 2023, three former backup dancers - Crystal Williams, Arianna Davis and Noelle Rodriguez - sued the Grammy winner for alleged sexual and racial harassment and a hostile work environment. Lizzo denied these allegations in an Instagram post. The case is currently being reviewed by the court of appeals, with the next hearing to be held Jan. 14, 2025. The following month, another complaint was filed by Asha Daniels, a fashion designer who toured with Lizzo, alleging a "racist and sexualized" environment. Lizzo again denied these allegations, and her lawyer clarified that she is no longer a defendant as an individual, but the lawsuit is still active.
