Fifth graders from all elementary school sites came together to showcase their skills. They demonstrated how to assemble their instruments with ease, introducing the basic sounds taught at the beginning of the band journey. Through proper use of mouthpieces, they showed the correct blowing techniques. Additionally, they performed some basic songs that highlighted the progress they have made. This was a remarkable display of the foundation laid by the elementary band program.
It was clear that these young musicians were eager to share their newfound knowledge and enthusiasm with the audience. Their performances were a testament to the hard work and dedication of their teachers and the support of the district.
The Los Alamos Middle School symphonic band and the Los Alamos High School wind symphony added a touch of grandeur to the evening. Their performances were filled with passion and skill, showcasing the evolution of the band program. The symphonic band played with precision and finesse, while the wind symphony brought a sense of power and energy.
The following evening, the LAPS jazz program hosted the Winter Jazz 2024. The LAMS jazz orchestra and jazz band, along with the LAHS jazz bands, took the stage and performed with style. The Los Alamos Jazz Project Pajarito Combo and Capulin Combo also added their unique flavor to the event. This was a celebration of jazz music and the talent of the students involved.
District band directors Zane Meek, Deanna Teague, Christine Subratie, and Steve Iliff played a crucial role in organizing these performances. Their vision and dedication have created a vibrant music program in the district.
Iliff expressed his gratitude, saying, "We are grateful and lucky that we have a district that is supportive of vertically aligned music programs across various schools and supportive of students being in the music program at every level." This support has allowed students to develop their musical skills and pursue their passions.
The LAPS music program also hosts a spring program that includes elementary, middle, and high school choir, band, jazz band, and orchestra students. The Spring Arts Festival is planned for Thursday April 24, 2025, at Los Alamos High School. This is an exciting opportunity for students to showcase their talents and share their love of music with the community.
