Maestros of the Double Bass: ASU Professor Catalin Rotaru Breaks World Records in China

Arizona State University's Catalin Rotaru, professor of double bass in the School of Music, Dance and Theatre, and Wan Ting Yu, ASU doctoral music student, recently participated in a groundbreaking Guinness World Record event in China. Rotaru, the only American representative, was invited by renowned double bass professor Song Yi to be part of the largest double bass ensemble and festival on record.

Unlocking the Virtuosity of the Double Bass on a Global Stage

Pioneering the Double Bass Ensemble

The Double Bass Aircraft Carrier Orchestra, established in 2012 by Professor Song Yi, brought together the world's leading double bass artists and educators to participate in a historic event. Rotaru, the sole representative from the United States, was honored to be part of this groundbreaking ensemble. "It was an honor to be invited to the world record attempt in China, especially since I was the only American present," Rotaru expressed.The ensemble, consisting of 338 performers ranging from 6 to 76 years old, hailed from various music schools across China, as well as from France, the Czech Republic, and South Korea. Each participant was a professional musician, including students, showcasing the depth and diversity of the double bass community.

Sharing Insights and Techniques at the International Double Bass Art Festival

In addition to the world record attempt, Rotaru and Yu were invited to perform and teach master classes at the fourth International Double Bass Art Festival held at the renowned Yehudi Menuhin School in Qingdao, Shandong, China. Rotaru, the featured artist, delivered the closing recital, accompanied by Yu on piano. The duo also shared their unique insights and playing techniques with the festival attendees through their double bass master classes.The festival's eight-day program provided a unique platform for double bass enthusiasts and professionals to connect, learn, and celebrate the art of double bass performance. Rotaru and Yu's participation in this global event not only showcased their exceptional talents but also highlighted the growing importance of the double bass in the world of music.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing the Unique Instrument

Rotaru acknowledged the unique challenges of organizing such a large-scale event with double bass players. "It was a very unique event as no one has ever attempted to do something like this with double bass players, as there are not very many of us," he said. "Our instrument is also very large and not easy to travel with halfway around the world."Despite these logistical hurdles, the festival and world record attempt were a resounding success, promoting the art of double bass performance on the global stage. Rotaru's participation, as the only American representative, underscored the growing international recognition of the double bass and its role in shaping the future of music.

Rotaru's involvement in the Guinness World Record event is a testament to his dedication to the double bass and its legacy. In 2017, he traveled to Japan to help bring to life the famous Bottesini bass, further solidifying his commitment to the instrument and its place in the musical landscape.The Qingdao International Double Bass Festival and the record-breaking ensemble performance have not only celebrated the virtuosity of the double bass but also highlighted its increasingly important position in global music culture.
