In recent months, the return of Major League Baseball regular season games to over-the-air television has been a significant topic of discussion. TEGNA has announced three new deals that will bring play-by-play baseball action to fans through their broadcast properties. These agreements involve partnerships with the Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, and San Diego Padres, allowing select games to be simulcast on local television stations in Denver, Phoenix, and San Diego respectively. The deals also include advertising and sponsorship opportunities as well as pre-game shows for some teams.
In Denver, KUSA-9, an NBC affiliate, is extending its long-standing partnership with the Colorado Rockies by collaborating with sibling station KTVD-20 to simulcast 20 regular-season games. This arrangement begins with a May 23 home game against the New York Yankees. KUSA-TV and TEGNA will manage local and regional advertising and sponsorships for these broadcasts, which are presented by bet365.
Meanwhile, in Phoenix, TEGNA’s KPNX-12 has struck a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks to simulcast 10 games throughout the 2025 season, commencing on April 25 when the team plays against the Atlanta Braves. Notably, this marks the first time the Diamondbacks' regular-season games will air on a broadcast TV station. In addition to game coverage, KPNX will introduce "D-backs on Deck," a one-hour pre-game show featuring insights, interviews, and behind-the-scenes content.
In San Diego, the Padres have reached an agreement with TEGNA to broadcast 10 Saturday regular-season games on KFMB-8 and Channel 8.2. At least seven of these games will be simulcast on KFMB-TV, while the rest will air on KFMB-8.2, starting on April 26. These broadcasts come after MLB assumed the local media rights from Warner Bros. Discovery following the closure of AT&T SportsNet RSN last year.
Through these agreements, baseball enthusiasts in these regions will now have the opportunity to enjoy live game action on free-to-air television, along with additional programming such as pre-game shows. Moreover, TEGNA and its partner networks will enhance the viewing experience with comprehensive advertising and sponsorship initiatives, ensuring an engaging experience for both fans and advertisers alike.
