2024-10-27
In a world where tradition often reigns supreme, Betty Duarte-Matwick's passion for mariachi music sparked a revolution that not only changed her life but also helped transform the landscape of this vibrant genre in Phoenix. By fostering an inclusive environment, she aimed to create pathways for women and those with diverse experiences to thrive in the music industry, reshaping the landscape one note at a time.
Empowering Women, Elevating Mariachi
Challenging Conventions, Embracing Inclusivity
Duarte's determination to explore mariachi music dates back to about 2002 when she asked a professor of ethnomusicology at Arizona State University if she could audit his class to deepen her knowledge of the music. "When I started, I was one of the few women in my class at ASU," she recalls. "We were all passionate about the music, but I wanted to push boundaries and redefine what a mariachi group could look like." This belief in the power of collaboration drove Duarte to form Mariachi Pasión, an all-female mariachi band, in 2003. In a field dominated by men, she saw an opportunity to create a space where women could not only play but excel and shine.Redefining Authenticity
The path wasn't easy. Traditionalists questioned their authenticity and commitment. "We've been told we're not 'pure' enough, but music isn't about purity; it's about connection," she said. This belief became the foundation of Mariachi Pasión, where inclusivity thrives and performances cater to diverse audiences. They created a space where everyone felt welcome, challenging the notion of what a "true" mariachi group should look like.A Tapestry of Talent
The band includes an array of gifted musicians, each bringing their unique strengths to the group. Michelle Vallarta, Issa Johnson, Angela Keeter, Carolina Sanchez and Naxely Hurtado play violins, while Melissa Leal shines on the trumpet. The vihuelas, five-stringed instruments resembling small guitars, are expertly handled by Rosy Corona-Shreeves and Victoria Amador-Morales. Duarte brings the deep, resonant tones of the guitarron to the group. "Without these girls, there is no group," she says. "Each one brings something unique, and together we create magic."Celebrating Milestones and Memories
Over the years, Mariachi Pasión has played countless weddings, quinceañeras, birthdays and corporate events, leaving audiences inspired by the joy and emotion their music brings. Some memories stand out as particularly special, such as opening for comedian George Lopez during his 2014 comedy tour at the Celebrity Theater and performing at the inaugural event of Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs. "We were honored to play for someone who represents female strength in our state," Duarte recalls. "It was a historic moment, and we felt proud to be part of it."The Bonds that Unite
The camaraderie among the band members runs deep, and Duarte embraces her role as a mentor and guitarronera, guiding younger musicians through the complexities of mariachi. "We all take care of each other," she says. "It's almost like family." Duarte also points out the critical support of the men in their lives, who help manage schedules and encourage their passion. This sense of community fosters an environment where every member feels comfortable to express themselves authentically, transforming potential mistakes into moments of joy and connection.A Legacy of Empowerment
Duarte's vision for Mariachi Pasión extends beyond performance. She wants to empower the next generation of female musicians, showing young women that they can chase their dreams. "Education is essential; it's a tool for empowerment," she says. As Mariachi Pasión continues to thrive, Duarte envisions a future where their music resonates with even more audiences, inspiring the passing down of this rich tradition to the next generation.Mariachi Pasión's journey is a testament to the power of community, resilience and the magic of music. Through every note played, they share a story — one of strength, unity and the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood. Each performance is a celebration of identity, passion and the enduring spirit of women coming together to create something beautiful.
