Marvel's Iconic Heroes Set to Debut in a Retro-Futuristic Universe
2025-04-04

In just four months, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will welcome its long-awaited First Family with the premiere of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. This marks the realization of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige's vision to incorporate the legendary superhero quartet into the MCU. The film takes a unique approach by situating the story within an alternate mid-20th-century multiverse strand where art deco aesthetics meet science fiction. As showcased in exclusive images from Empire, the characters—Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm, and Johnny Storm—are depicted as brilliant astronauts before their transformation into superheroes.

Director Matt Shakman aimed to capture the optimistic essence of the 1950s and 60s, reminiscent of the Space Race era. He envisioned the narrative centered around these adventurers who, instead of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, became pioneers venturing into space. Their return marked not only their emergence as heroes but also their identity as a family unit. Shakman, known for his work on the retro-inspired WandaVision, sought to infuse the movie with a period-appropriate authenticity. "I wanted to create as grounded a version of space as possible," he explained, emphasizing retro-future technology akin to Apollo 11 missions.

This authenticity extended beyond the storyline and into the filmmaking process itself. Shakman desired a cinematic style reminiscent of 1965, drawing inspiration from Stanley Kubrick’s techniques. Practical sets, props, and old lenses were utilized alongside modern CG to achieve a timeless aesthetic. A highlight includes a 14-foot-tall spaceship miniature, echoing Kubrick's use of miniatures in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps distinguishes itself from other MCU films by existing in its own universe, free from crossover appearances or Easter eggs. This autonomy allows for a fresh and innovative exploration of the superhero genre. While future interactions with other MCU worlds are anticipated, such as in Avengers: Doomsday, this film remains a standalone journey focusing on the origins of the Fantastic Four.

Audiences can expect a captivating blend of nostalgia and innovation when The Fantastic Four: First Steps releases in UK cinemas on July 25. With its distinct setting and storytelling approach, the film promises to redefine the superhero narrative while honoring its roots in classic sci-fi and adventure tropes.
