The great Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To is widely renowned for his captivating gangster dramas, featuring operatic gunfights, intense drama, and complex characters. His talent extends far beyond this genre, and one of my cherished films of his is the remarkable romantic comedy "Don’t Go Breaking My Heart," which he co-directed with his frequent collaborator Wai Ka-fai. This film stands as one of the finest love triangle movies ever made and is the perfect choice to enjoy with that special someone during the holiday season. However, time is running out as it is leaving Netflix on December 1st, and there is currently no other way to access it - no digital rental or purchase option, no other streaming service has it, and physical releases range from being "exorbitantly expensive" to being "difficult to find." Experience the Romance and Drama of "Don’t Go Breaking My Heart"
Gorgeous Cast and a Captivating Love Triangle
Starring three beautiful and charming individuals (a solid foundation for a romance), "Don’t Go Breaking My Heart" follows Chi-yan (Gao Yuanyuan), a recently single financial analyst whose heart is torn between two suitors. There is a CEO (Louis Koo) who stood her up and an architect (Daniel Wu) she assists in getting back on his feet after a difficult time. Both men possess their own allure and qualities as potential partners. Koo's CEO is more emotionally detached but offers financial security, while Wu's architect is filled with romantic longing, yet he is still piecing together his life. It's understandable why the decision is tough - this isn't your ordinary "one good option, one bad" love triangle story. To cleverly uses the backdrop of a financial crisis to depict finding a life partner as a form of comparison shopping in the dating marketplace. Each viewer will have their own preference for which partner she chooses, and it's possible to envision her being happy with either of them. Additionally, they end up working in buildings across from Chi-yan's workplace, leading to one of the film's most endearing elements. The characters flirt by placing sticky notes on the large glass windows of their buildings, creating smiley faces and sending messages to each other. The glass windows also provide an excellent opportunity for one of the classic rom-com tropes - mix-ups and miscommunications resulting in humorous situations. This movie is not only filled with heart but also with laughter. It offers a perfect blend of humor and romance, with sight gags, side-splitting dialogue, and plenty of physical comedy. It has elements of "His Girl Friday" and "Playtime," making it an absolute delight to watch. It showcases Johnnie To at the peak of his powers, nailing the romantic comedy genre with finesse.
The chemistry between the actors is palpable, and their performances bring the characters to life. Gao Yuanyuan shines as the conflicted Chi-yan, while Louis Koo and Daniel Wu bring their respective characters to vivid life. The story unfolds at a perfect pace, keeping the audience engaged from start to finish. Whether you're a fan of romantic comedies or simply looking for a great movie to watch, "Don’t Go Breaking My Heart" is a must-see.
Romantic Moments and Comedic Twists
The film is filled with numerous romantic moments that will tug at your heartstrings. From the initial meetings between Chi-yan and the two suitors to the tender exchanges and gestures, every scene is crafted with care. The comedic twists add an extra layer of enjoyment, as the characters find themselves in hilarious situations due to misunderstandings and mix-ups. Whether it's a misdelivered message or a comical accident, these moments add to the overall charm of the movie. One of the standout scenes is when the characters try to communicate through the sticky notes on the glass windows. It's a simple yet effective way to convey their feelings and add a touch of whimsy to the story. The attention to detail in these scenes makes the movie feel truly special.
The comedic timing is impeccable, with jokes that land perfectly and leave the audience laughing out loud. It's a testament to the skill of the filmmakers in creating a movie that is both heartwarming and hilarious.
