In a recent interview, Max George of The Wanted 2.0 shared his harrowing experience with heart issues that led to the installation of a pacemaker. Initially feeling unwell after a tour, George’s condition worsened until he was hospitalized. He vividly recounts the night he wrote a will on his phone, fearing for his life. Doctors discovered an irregular heart rhythm, necessitating immediate medical intervention. After a successful surgery, George is now focusing on recovery and re-engaging with life.
George describes how his health began deteriorating following a tour in December. Initially dismissing his lethargy as minor, he soon realized something was seriously wrong when he woke up one morning with blue hands and arms. His mother, noticing his condition, called for medical help. This decision proved crucial, as it saved his life. George felt a tightening sensation in his throat and struggled to move, making it clear that immediate care was essential.
Feeling increasingly weak and unable to shake off the lethargy, George stayed at his mother’s house where his alarming symptoms became more apparent. One morning, he awoke to find his extremities discolored and cold. Recognizing the severity, his mother promptly sought medical assistance. George recalls the panic setting in as his condition worsened, with his arms becoming immobile and a choking sensation in his throat. His mother’s quick action ensured he received timely medical attention, which ultimately saved his life.
Once admitted, doctors identified a serious issue with the lower part of George’s heart, where the electrical signals were not transmitting correctly. This resulted in a dangerously low heart rate, dropping to just 26 beats per minute. The realization that his heart was failing brought shock and fear. Over the next few days, his condition fluctuated, reaching its lowest point on December 13 when both his heart rate and blood pressure plummeted simultaneously.
After undergoing a CT scan on December 15, George had his pacemaker fitted three days later. The surgery, performed under heavy sedation, took about three hours. Upon regaining consciousness, he experienced a renewed sense of life as his heart rate normalized. Feeling the blood flow return to his extremities was a profound moment. George also found solace in the presence of his partner, Maisie Smith, who provided emotional support during this challenging time. Reflecting on the experience, George expressed gratitude for the medical team and his loved ones, emphasizing the importance of staying positive and focused on recovery.
