Empowering Women and Families through Generous Giving
Donating for a Cause
On Tuesday, Dec. 3, the renowned philanthropist Melinda French Gates made a significant announcement. She decided to donate $1 million to organizations that hold a special place in her heart in honor of Giving Tuesday. As she stated in a video shared on Instagram, she is partnering with @everydotorg during this giving season to mobilize the power of everyday givers. Starting from today until December 13, her organization Pivotal is matching up to $1 million in donations to support two organizations she deeply admires - the Vote Mama Foundation and @rcicaregiving.The Vote Mama Foundation plays a crucial role in supporting mothers running for political office, while the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers advocates for those who care for others. This shows her dedication to different aspects of women and family support.Learning the Importance of Giving Back
French Gates previously teased the announcement last Monday, Nov. 25 on Instagram. In a video, she discussed her philanthropic work over the years and witnessed how it has impacted others. She emphasized that she learned the "importance of giving back" from her parents, who taught her and her siblings the responsibility to help make life better for others. As she said in the video accompanied by photos of herself working with students, "I saw the difference that one person's time could make and how it could impact and help others. It's like ripples in a pond. You give something back and never know whose lives you will actually touch."This shows her deep-rooted belief in the power of giving and how it can create a ripple effect.Stepping into a New Chapter
Earlier this year, French Gates announced that she would step down from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which she co-founded with Bill Gates over 20 years ago. Since her departure, she has been focusing on her nonprofit organization, Pivotal Ventures, which aims to empower women. She opened up about her work in the aftermath of her divorce with Bill Gates after 27 years of marriage (finalized in August 2021). The couple has two daughters, Jennifer, 28, and Phoebe, 22, and a son Rory, 25. She believes that now she can use her full voice and resources to make a greater impact. As she said, "Fundamentally, I'm the same person, but I can use my full voice in any way I want to. And my full resources in any way I want to. And that, to me, is something I've been saying about women in society; that they should have their full voice, their full resources, their full decision making authority. And now I'm role modeling that."This shows her determination to continue making a difference in the lives of women and families.
