Walk the Beat began as an idea conceived by Dave Palmer and a friend in Grand Haven, where they envisioned a music festival that would bring people together through rhythm and melody. When Sara Kane-Smart adopted the concept for the White Lake area, it transformed into something even greater—a platform to support aspiring musicians with tangible gifts like refurbished instruments and financial aid.
This initiative thrives on contributions from local businesses and community members, ensuring its sustainability year after year. The funds raised during the previous year's music festival directly contribute to the success of the current event, creating a cycle of generosity and inspiration.

At the heart of the event lies an impressive collection of instruments meticulously sourced and restored by Greg Bulson, who collaborates with local music stores such as Guitar Haven. These establishments set aside high-quality instruments specifically for Walk the Beat, allowing students to select pieces tailored to their needs. Among the offerings are acoustic and electric guitars, a bass uke, violin, clarinets, alto saxophones, saxophone mouthpieces, and flutes.

A student at Whitehall Middle School, she was awarded a step-up clarinet, which signifies a significant upgrade from her beginner model. "There’s a difference between a student clarinet and a step-up clarinet," Kennedy explained. "A student clarinet is made entirely of plastic with basic keys suitable for beginners, while a step-up instrument features solid wood construction and additional keys for enhanced playability."
Her mother, Alyssia Corder, expressed pride in her daughter's self-driven application process. "Kennedy wrote her entire essay without any assistance," Alyssia shared. "I had no idea she was applying until she showed me the completed work." Such dedication underscores the value placed on these opportunities and the lengths students go to secure them.

Robert Smart, a dedicated member of the White Lake Association, highlighted the collaborative nature of Walk the Beat. The association sells raffle tickets at the event, dedicating half of the proceeds to purchasing instruments and the remaining funds supporting broader community initiatives.
