A religious figure in Michigan is currently under scrutiny following accusations of inappropriate behavior during a visit to an Illinois church. Father Carlos Martins, known for his involvement in the exorcism-themed podcast The Exorcist Files, has been charged with misdemeanor battery in Illinois. The incident reportedly occurred on November 25 when Martins was visiting the Queen of Apostles parish in Joliet as part of a nationwide tour showcasing relics associated with St. Jude.
The allegations suggest that during this event, Martins allegedly engaged in disturbing actions involving a teenage girl's hair. According to local law enforcement, witnesses reported that he made jokes about having hair and then proceeded to grab the hair of a 13-year-old girl, placing it in his mouth and mimicking a flossing motion. Subsequently, he allegedly sat behind the girl and made growling noises. These actions led to swift condemnation from the Diocese of Joliet, which ordered Martins to leave their parish and diocese immediately. The religious order responsible for Treasures of the Church, the Companions of the Cross, also stated that Martins had agreed to withdraw from pastoral duties.
Despite the serious nature of these accusations, Martins' legal team maintains his innocence. Attorney Marcella Burke asserts that the charges are unfounded and claims they represent an attempt to discredit both Martins and the Church. She expressed confidence in the legal process and expects full exoneration for her client. Meanwhile, the Archdiocese of Detroit has prohibited Martins from engaging in any public ministry within its jurisdiction. This case highlights the importance of maintaining professionalism and respect in religious settings, underscoring the need for leaders to uphold high ethical standards and ensure the safety and dignity of all individuals involved in religious activities.
