In a heartwarming story, an Illinois mother is preparing to celebrate her first Christmas with her newborn son. This joyous occasion comes after a harrowing medical journey that included the discovery of a cancerous tumor and an emergency cesarean section. MaKenna Lauterbach, a young expectant mother from Washburn, faced a series of health challenges in the final weeks of her pregnancy. Initially dismissed as a persistent cough, her condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to a critical diagnosis. Her resilience and the exceptional care she received have now allowed her to cherish precious moments with her family.
In the autumn of 2023, MaKenna Lauterbach, then 26 years old, was eagerly awaiting the birth of her first child. However, what began as a nagging cough soon turned into a more serious concern. By the time she reached 36 weeks of pregnancy, MaKenna's symptoms worsened, prompting her to seek immediate medical attention. At the hospital, doctors discovered a large, grapefruit-sized tumor in her chest cavity and right lung, which was severely restricting oxygen flow to both her and her unborn baby.
Facing a life-threatening situation, MaKenna was transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. There, a multidisciplinary team of specialists worked tirelessly to stabilize her condition. On March 31, 2024, Dr. Lynn Yee, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, performed an emergency cesarean section on Easter Sunday, bringing her baby boy, Colter, into the world. Following the delivery, MaKenna was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. Surgeons removed her entire right lung, parts of the main pulmonary artery, and lymph nodes to eliminate the tumor.
Despite the severity of her condition, MaKenna's scans now show no evidence of metastatic melanoma. Her recovery has been nothing short of miraculous, allowing her to return home with her husband Parker and their newborn son. As they celebrate their first Christmas together on their farm, MaKenna expresses immense gratitude for the medical team that saved her life. “Because of Northwestern Medicine, I’m here today,” she says, adding, “I can’t say enough about the wonderful medical team that saved my life.”
This remarkable story underscores the importance of early detection and timely medical intervention. It also highlights the power of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. MaKenna's journey serves as a powerful reminder that with the right medical expertise and unwavering support, even the most challenging circumstances can lead to beautiful outcomes. Dr. Yee reflects on the experience, saying, “It just goes to show that when you get all the right medical teams in place, you can truly help families thrive.”
