Mom Jokes About Daughter's Name on TikTok, Then Faces Backlash for Not Sharing
2024-12-12
An ordinary mom's lighthearted joke about her daughter's name on TikTok unexpectedly led to a wave of reactions. Anikah, on TikTok @radicalweenie, shared a video set to Ariana Grande's "Popular" from Wicked while working on her daughter's hair. The on-screen text read, "She doesn't even know how trendy her name is, imagine being called [Sabrina Carpenter song] [colour from Wicked] [Taylor Swift song]. she is a walking pop culture reference." In the caption, she wrote, "Unbelievable how I prophesized so much four years ago."
Surprising Viral Growth and Mixed Reactions
Anikah was taken aback by how quickly the video went viral. Some viewers offered genuine guesses for the name, while others trolled with outlandish combinations. "That's what I love about TikTok, the side where people make funny, lighthearted jokes and replies. It's hilarious reading through those, but the mean ones aren't as fun. I have deleted some because I don't like the negativity," she explained.Later, she posted a video confirming she wouldn't share her daughter's name. Many commenters supported her decision, while others thought she should if she drew attention. One commenter even wrote, "Won't be doing a reveal of 'a child's name' but puts her face on the internet."Initial Intent and Boundary Setting
Anikah said she didn't think people would care that much. She doesn't share her daughter's name and uses an alias when talking about her online. She had a previous video making a joke about her daughter's name using the alias, which some mistook for the actual name due to the nature of the Internet. She was stunned by the turn her joke took. "I was just making a joke about how my daughter doesn't understand how trendy it is as she's only 3 and doesn't know much. I thought it was strange that people half-expected me to tell them her full name online. Obviously, I'm not going to do that as it's unfair to her. I don't want people finding us."Caution and Future Plans
Anikah is very careful on TikTok as it's still new to her. She just posts for her friends and didn't expect the video to take off. She's confused why so many are offended by her boundary. "It's more about other people and how they respond. I made a boundary saying I'm allowed to joke but not give personal information, and they were upset. I think it shows the current state of the Internet. People have high expectations and entitlement. Small creators should be able to set their lines."As for future posts, "I learned from this experience and will share even less about my child. She might not appear on my TikTok again. I'm not sure yet, but I'll be extra careful in the future."
