The story of Jonathan Dominique, a 2025 M.D. candidate at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, highlights an inspiring blend of passion for science and music. Growing up in Miramar, Florida, Dominique was first introduced to the medical field through his mother, who was studying nursing when he was young. This early exposure sparked his interest in medicine, which later solidified after watching a documentary about renowned neurosurgeon Ben Carson. However, Dominique’s journey is not just about academics; it intertwines with his love for music, creating a unique intersection where art meets healing. During his time at the University of Florida, he participated in programs that allowed him to use music as a therapeutic tool for patients, deepening his understanding of its power. Now pursuing a career in anesthesiology, Dominique plans to bring calmness and comfort to patients through both his medical expertise and musical talents.

Influenced by his Haitian-immigrant parents—his mother an RN at UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital and his father a clergyman—Dominique embraced education and hard work from a young age. Yet, balancing academic rigor with a passion for music wasn’t always easy. As a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, he found solace in playing various genres ranging from gospel to jazz. It wasn't until his sophomore year at the University of Florida that he discovered how music could serve others in meaningful ways. Volunteering with the Arts in Medicine program, he played piano in hospital atriums and accompanied Dance for Life sessions for Parkinson’s patients. Witnessing firsthand the impact music had on those around him transformed his perspective, making him realize its potential beyond personal enjoyment.

As part of the NextGenMD Ethics and Humanities pathway, Dominique delved deeper into combining music with healthcare. Collaborating with a recreational therapist at the Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center, he conducted interviews with patients recovering from traumatic brain injuries. These conversations inspired original compositions reflecting their experiences, marking a significant milestone in merging his artistic and professional aspirations. “This project has shown me the profound connection between my hobbies and future career,” Dominique reflected.

While Dominique always knew he wanted to become a physician, choosing a specialty took careful consideration. Initially drawn to surgery due to its hands-on nature, he ultimately opted for anesthesiology. Recognizing the demanding lifestyle associated with surgical residencies, he prioritized maintaining balance in life, including starting a family and continuing to nurture his musical pursuits. His empathetic demeanor and ability to put patients at ease have already earned praise, qualities he intends to carry forward into his chosen field.
