Nature-Inspired Melodies Triumph in Innovative Music Competition
2025-03-02

Two unique compositions, one capturing the serene ambiance of the Dolomites and the other sampling the rapid song of a nightingale, have emerged victorious in the inaugural Tune into Nature music competition. This contest, aimed at promoting new artists inspired by the natural world, has garnered attention from various genres including hip-hop, rock, pop, jazz, folk, and classical. The winning tracks will be featured on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Radio 3, showcasing the deep connection between nature and creativity.

In an innovative musical journey, Josephine Illingworth's "Dawn, Aurora" weaves together recordings made during her solitary stays in mountain huts in northern Italy. These recordings, combined with entries from hikers' guestbooks, create a vivid tapestry of mountain experiences. Meanwhile, Dan Cippico's "Nightingale," under his artist name Wildforms, draws inspiration from the mesmerizing song of the rare bird he recorded last spring. The track blends this natural sound with the rhythmic elements of drum’n’bass, creating a unique fusion that highlights the interplay between nature and electronic music.

The competition, founded by Miles Richardson, Professor of Nature Connectedness at the University of Derby, sought to highlight young talent and emphasize the role of nature in creative expression. Judges, comprising musicians, artists, and writers, praised both tracks for their emotional depth and innovative use of natural sounds. Madame Gandhi noted how Cippico seamlessly incorporated the nightingale's song into his piece, while Jason Singh highlighted the hopeful feeling in the music, praising the creation of new instruments from natural elements.

Richardson, who chaired the judges' discussion, emphasized the importance of fostering hope and strengthening our bond with nature as part of addressing environmental challenges. He expressed immense joy in listening to the entries, which celebrate the natural world and offer a fresh perspective on its integration into music. The competition also provided winners with financial support, professional remix opportunities, and access to an extensive archive of nature field recordings.

The Tune into Nature music prize not only celebrates the beauty of nature but also inspires a renewed appreciation for the environment through artistic expression. By blending natural sounds with modern musical styles, the competition showcases the potential for creativity to foster a deeper connection with the world around us. Both winners express gratitude for the recognition and hope that their music will resonate with listeners, encouraging them to find harmony with nature.
