The iconic Celebrity Theater in Broussard, a beloved landmark for over two decades, is set to make way for new development. The theater closed its doors in 2023, marking the end of an era for this local institution. Steven Hebert, CEO of Billeaud Companies, explained that despite the abundance of movie screens in Lafayette Parish, this particular venue struggled to remain competitive. Following the closure, the company acquired the property with hopes of finding a viable repurposing solution.
After exploring several options, it became clear that renovating the existing structure would be prohibitively expensive and impractical. "We engaged with multiple architects and engineers, but the costs were simply too high," Hebert noted. Instead of holding onto the past, Hebert sees the demolition as an opportunity for transformation. With eight acres of prime real estate along the U.S. Hwy. 90/I-49 Lafayette Connector, the site holds immense potential for diverse commercial ventures. Hebert envisions dividing the land into parcels to accommodate multiple tenants, creating a vibrant commercial hub that meets modern demands.
The future of this location is bright, promising a fresh start that aligns with current trends and needs. While acknowledging the sentimental attachment many locals have to the theater, Hebert remains optimistic about the site's redevelopment. This change reflects the evolving nature of industries and communities, presenting an exciting chapter for Broussard. The demolition signifies not an end, but a beginning—a chance to reshape the area in ways that foster growth and innovation, ensuring the community thrives in the years to come.
