A New Chapter Unfolds for Redfield's Iconic Amaris Inn
2024-12-27

After relocating to South Dakota, Randy and Laura Viall transformed the Wilson Motor Inn into the charming Amaris Inn. This rural retreat not only offers comfortable accommodations but also a unique underground movie theater experience. The couple’s vision extends beyond hospitality, aiming to enrich community life with family-friendly activities year-round.

Embracing Rural Life in South Dakota

The Vialls' journey from bustling California and Arizona to the serene town of Redfield was driven by their desire for a simpler lifestyle. With their youngest child finishing school in Arizona, they sought a community that resonated with their values. Redfield, with its slower pace and tight-knit community, became the perfect fit. Despite initial skepticism from friends about the cold climate, Laura embraced the change wholeheartedly. She found joy in the cooler temperatures and the charm of small-town living.

Settling into their new home, Laura quickly realized she needed something to keep her engaged. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to take on the challenge of renovating the newly acquired motel. The property required extensive maintenance, but the couple saw it as an opportunity to create a welcoming space for travelers and locals alike. Their daughter and her fiancé also moved to Spink County, adding another layer of excitement to this new chapter. Laura’s vision expanded to include activities for families, reflecting her experience as a mother of five. She envisioned a place where children could enjoy outdoor fun during summer and cozy indoor entertainment during winter.

Innovative Entertainment at the Amaris Inn

To enhance the local entertainment scene, Laura introduced a series of weekend movie screenings in the hotel’s basement theater. This initiative provides a delightful alternative for families looking for affordable activities. The intimate setting accommodates 36 guests, offering a relaxed atmosphere for enjoying second-run films. Holiday movies have been particularly well-received, drawing positive feedback from attendees who appreciate the thoughtful addition to Redfield’s cultural offerings.

Looking ahead, the Vialls plan to expand their offerings further. They aim to introduce a sledding park during the winter months and a bounce house and slip-and-slide area in spring and summer. These additions will provide residents with more opportunities for fun and recreation close to home. The couple’s sons are also joining them in South Dakota, with one son planning to assist in running the hotel after completing his Coast Guard service. Another son and his wife will contribute to the business operations. While not all family members will relocate, the Vialls remain committed to building a vibrant community hub at the Amaris Inn, blending hospitality with family-friendly activities.
