After a seven-year break, Nome-Beltz Middle High School is set to become the center of musical excellence as it hosts the annual Music Regions event. This gathering will bring together over 80 talented students from six different schools across Alaska, including Kotzebue, Bethel, Dillingham, Unalakleet, and Nome itself. First-year band instructor Richard Sargent emphasizes that this competition offers invaluable opportunities for students to grow musically and personally. Preparations have been ongoing for months, with students demonstrating dedication and enthusiasm in their daily practice sessions.
This year marks a significant milestone for the school’s music program, as it resumes its role as host after years of absence. Mr. Sargent highlights how participating in such an event allows students to explore more challenging pieces and engage in experiences beyond what regular classes offer. He notes that having an audience transforms rehearsals into meaningful performances, motivating participants to give their best effort. The two-day schedule includes individual school programs on Friday evening, followed by solo and ensemble showcases on Saturday night.
Personal growth remains at the forefront of the event's objectives. According to Sargent, fostering self-improvement rather than comparison against others encourages positive development among participants. By focusing inwardly on progress since starting out, students can celebrate achievements without undue pressure or negativity.
Friday’s concerts commence at 7 p.m., while Saturday’s events begin earlier at 6 p.m. Following solos and ensembles, all bands unite for a collaborative performance before concluding with a chorus presentation. This unique opportunity not only hones musical skills but also strengthens camaraderie amongst young musicians from diverse communities.
