Lee and Aurora: A Journey Through Their Lives

Lee, now 25 years old, initially arrived at the zoo in 2018 but was temporarily relocated to the Louisville Zoo in Kentucky in 2020 to provide adequate space for other polar bears. He returned to Columbus in 2023 after his brief stint elsewhere. During his first stay in Columbus, Lee fathered his first cub, Kulu, born on Thanksgiving Day in 2019 to mother Aurora.

Aurora, named after the northern lights, was born on November 25, 2006, at the Toledo Zoo as one of a pair of twins. Her twin, Anana, sadly passed away in 2022 due to declining health. Aurora has been a prolific mother, giving birth to several cubs, including Nora in 2015, the zoo’s first surviving cub in 27 years, and Neva and Nuniq in 2016, who were the only polar bear cubs born in North American zoos that year. Each of these milestones underscores the importance of Aurora's role in the conservation of polar bears.
