The Purrfect History: Unveiling New York's Feline Legacy Through Walking Tours
2025-01-02
When it comes to the rich tapestry of New York City’s history, few realize that cats have played a pivotal role. Peggy Gavan, an animal historian and founder of "Hatching Cat of Gotham," has become a leading authority on this unique aspect. Her collaboration with Dan Rimada of Bodega Cats of New York led to the creation of Cats About Town (CAT) Walking Tours, offering a fresh perspective on NYC’s storied past through the lens of its feline inhabitants.
Discover the Hidden Tales of New York’s Cats: A Journey Like No Other
The Birth of a Unique Vision
Peggy Gavan’s journey began long before she ever imagined leading walking tours. An established animal historian, her blog "Hatching Cat of Gotham" garnered significant attention, eventually catching the eye of Rutgers University Press. This recognition propelled her into writing books on the subject, cementing her status as an expert in the field. In 2023, Gavan’s path crossed with Dan Rimada, founder of Bodega Cats of New York, during CheddarTV’s documentary about Old New York’s cats. Shortly after, an unexpected email from Rimada proposed a collaboration on cat-themed walking tours.Gavan had toyed with the idea of such tours but never pursued it until this opportunity presented itself. “Dan is incredibly skilled at logistics and web design,” she explained. “Within a week, we had a name, a website, and even a press release ready. It was smoother than I could have imagined.” The synergy between Gavan’s historical expertise and Rimada’s logistical prowess created the perfect blend for launching CAT Walking Tours.A Flourishing Partnership
The success of CAT Walking Tours exceeded all expectations. Since August, the tours have sold out repeatedly, garnering substantial media coverage. “We’ve clicked right away,” Gavan shared. “Our tours are unlike anything else available. People love the concept; they laugh, take pictures, and share their enthusiasm. We’re now looking to expand by hiring more tour guides and adding new routes.”Each tour offers a distinct experience. For instance, the Brooklyn Heights Tour takes participants on a picturesque two-hour stroll through one of the city’s most charming neighborhoods. Starting at Royal Whitman Park, the route winds around to Brooklyn Borough Hall, offering stunning views of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. Along the way, tourists can opt for a visit to the Brooklyn Cat Cafe for a hands-on encounter with real cats.Expanding Horizons
In addition to the Brooklyn Heights Tour, CAT Walking Tours also explores Manhattan’s Financial District. Beginning near Trinity Church and Zuccotti Park, this tour follows a straight line up to City Hall Park and beyond. Plans are underway to introduce a Lower East Side tour, which will include stops at the Meow Parlor, another popular cat cafe.Gavan emphasizes the uniqueness of these tours. “I try to make history fun without overwhelming people with dates and statistics,” she noted. “For example, did you know a cat once saved Brooklyn Borough Hall from burning down? These stories add a special charm to our tours.” Participants often bring photos and stories of their own cats, fostering a warm, community-driven atmosphere.Capturing the Essence of New York’s Feline History
While cat sightings are rare, especially in areas like the Financial District, Gavan encourages locals to participate. “If you live in Brooklyn Heights and have a cat, keep your shades open so we can catch a glimpse!” she joked. To sweeten the deal, Gavan offers free tickets for future tours to those who spot a cat during the walk.Despite the seasonal hiatus, interest remains high. “We’ll resume tours in March or April, depending on the weather,” Gavan said. “Gift certificates are available for purchase now, making them perfect for any special occasion.” As the tours return, they promise to offer an unforgettable journey through New York’s feline history, blending education with entertainment in a way only CAT Walking Tours can achieve.
