Renowned Baseball Star Set to Appear at Southcoast Scholarship Gala
2025-05-04

A prestigious annual event is set to return to the Southcoast, promising an evening filled with excitement and generosity. Former Boston Red Sox centerfielder Johnny Damon will grace attendees with his presence as the special guest at the upcoming Celebrity Scholarship Dinner. Hosted by One Southcoast Chamber and the Robert F. Stoico/First Fed Charitable Foundation, this gala aims to raise funds for scholarships benefiting local students. The dinner will take place on May 20 at the Venus de Milo in Swansea, marking a revitalization of an event that has been cherished for two decades.

The Return of a Beloved Tradition

In a picturesque corner of New England, the autumn season brings more than just vibrant foliage; it heralds a rekindling of community spirit through the resurrection of a long-standing tradition. For twenty years, from 2000 to 2020, the UMass Dartmouth Center for Marketing and Research organized a scholarship gala featuring renowned sports figures. However, after the pandemic forced its closure, One Southcoast Chamber stepped in to ensure the legacy continued. Under the guidance of Professor Nora Barnes, who had previously spearheaded the event, they have meticulously revived every detail, including establishing vital connections.

This year's honoree, Johnny Damon, whose illustrious career includes victories with both the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, promises to captivate audiences. Attendees can look forward to an intimate discussion between Damon and Chamber CEO Mike O'Sullivan, followed by a meet-and-greet session, autograph signings, and a delightful evening of dining and auctions. Moreover, twelve deserving students will receive scholarships, one of which honors former Chamber President Rick Kidder.

Tickets for this unforgettable evening are available at onesouthcoast.com/celebritydinner, with a limited-time discount offer running until May 9.

Beyond baseball legends and charitable endeavors, the region's history also includes tales of civic leadership. Notably, New Bedford has seen 49 distinct mayors, alongside two acting and one interim mayor, each contributing uniquely to the city’s evolution.

Additionally, military memorials scattered throughout New Bedford stand as tributes to veterans' organizations, reflecting the area's deep respect for service and sacrifice.

As a journalist covering this story, I am struck by the powerful synergy of nostalgia and progress embodied in events like these. They not only celebrate past achievements but also foster future opportunities for young minds. Such initiatives remind us of the importance of preserving traditions while embracing innovation, ensuring that communities thrive across generations.
