The Resemblance Between Bones and High Potential
2024-11-23
In the realm of television, there exists a unique place in my heart dedicated to "Bones." It was the inaugural show that I ever indulged in a binge-watching spree, and I became irrevocably infatuated with Booth and Brennan. Presently, a new procedural has emerged on the 2024 TV schedule that has left me in awe - "High Potential," and it bears a striking resemblance to the classic Fox series. As the Kaitlin Olson-led hit continues to make its mark, there is one crucial note that I believe her character Morgan and Daniel Sunjata's Karadec should take from David Boreanaz's Booth and Emily Deschanel's Brennan.

Why a Slow Burn is Essential

Although there was initial romantic tension between Booth and Brennan, it wasn't until Season 6 that they truly came together. Yes, it took a remarkable six years for those two to finally confront their feelings for one another, and I savored every moment of the longing, the evasion of emotions, and the work-related shenanigans. This is precisely the kind of energy that I sense brewing between Morgan and Karadec on "High Potential."As my colleague Nick Venable pointed out, "High Potential" is an exceptional crime show that sidesteps the common pitfalls of procedurals. While he believes that Morgan and Karadec should not be a couple at present, I hold a different view. Admittedly, there are no clear signs of them getting together at the moment, and I understand his perspective. However, the chemistry between them is undeniable, and I am in it for the long haul, not a fleeting romance. What made "Bones" so great was that the romance was never the main plot. For a long time, it remained a deep, almost non-existent subplot. Even when it became a consistent element of the show, it was not the top priority. At its core, Booth and Bones' working relationship was the centerpiece. The romance followed suit, and I adored this dynamic.I desire the same for Morgan and Karadec. They collaborate seamlessly, and their bickering is endlessly entertaining. I feel that the seeds of something more are being sown between them.Over the years, Booth and Brennan developed a profound platonic love for each other. I relish seeing Olson and Sunjata's characters as friends, and they flourish in this stage. But as they grow closer and closer, I can sense the sparks starting to ignite.Let's not rush into it too quickly. Let Olson shine as the single-mom Morgan for a while. Let's explore more of her relationship with Ludo, especially in terms of how they co-parent. Once she has truly mastered the art of balancing her job and home life and has become an invaluable asset at the LAPD, we can sprinkle a touch of romance between her and Karadec.Just like Booth and Brennan, they are both incredibly intelligent, completely opposite, yet care deeply for each other. I am eagerly anticipating seeing how Karadec gets to know Morgan's kids. I look forward to witnessing them solve countless more crimes together. And perhaps, in the distant future - perhaps after five or six seasons - we will see them embark on a romantic relationship. What can I say? I have a penchant for a good slow burn, and "High Potential" holds great potential for one. Here's hoping that they take a cue from "Bones" and one day - but not too soon - Morgan and Karadec will act on their feelings.Until then, you can catch these two solving crimes when "High Potential" returns to the 2025 TV schedule on January 7 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. You can also stream the episodes that have already aired and revisit all of "Bones" with a Hulu subscription to understand why I keep comparing the vibes between Booth and Brennan and Morgan and Karadec.
