Blending Tradition and Innovation

The driving force behind TGL is a collaborative effort led by golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, along with CEO Mike McCarley. Their vision is to create a version of the game that seamlessly integrates the rich traditions of golf with a more modern and engaging approach. "If we're creating a version of the game today, in 2024, what would that look like?" says McCarley. "Something that was really important to Tiger, Rory, and myself from the very early days, was we want to keep a foot firmly planted in the traditions of the game, which meant working with the PGA Tour, being in collaboration with the other governing bodies in the game."

Embracing Technology and Spectator Experience

The TGL experience will feature several innovative elements that aim to captivate both seasoned golf enthusiasts and new audiences alike. All matches will be played at the purpose-built SoFi Center in Palm Beach, Florida, with the action broadcast live on Sportsnet or Sportsnet+. Drives and approach shots will be hit into a giant IMAX-sized simulator, while the short game will be played on a changeable turf golf hole within the arena. The matches will be fast-paced, with a shot clock, players being mic'd up, and no caddies allowed. Additionally, each team will have four timeouts to strategize with their teammates.

Collaboration with the PGA Tour

Maintaining the integrity of the sport is a top priority for the TGL organizers. They have worked closely with the PGA Tour to ensure that the league's schedule and format complement the existing professional golf calendar. TGL matches will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays, allowing the players to participate in their regular PGA Tour events from Wednesday through Sunday.

Expanding the Golfing Landscape

The inaugural TGL season will feature six teams, each representing a different city: Atlanta Drive GC, Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links Golf Club, Los Angeles Golf Club, New York Golf Club, and The Bay Golf Club. While there are no Canadian players currently signed up, the league has expressed a desire to expand into the Canadian market in the near future, potentially including "hometown" golfers.
