Unveiling the Trauma of a Dog Attack
Details of the Attack
Bronwyn Newport vividly recalls the events that unfolded. "There was this dog running around seemingly harmlessly, not barking or showing any signs of aggression. I reached out to pet it, but it made a strange skid move and jerked away. Suddenly, it circled around and lunged at me, biting me behind the knee. It was a complete shock and I completely lost my composure. I did all the wrong things - I screamed and jerked my arm. I had never been bitten by a dog before and I didn't know how to react. As I tried to pull away, it got my other leg on the thigh. Then it clamped onto my right arm, where my bicep is, and I couldn't get it off. The pain was excruciating and the fear was overwhelming."The injuries she sustained were severe. "When I went to the emergency room, I had 37 separate bites. They had to do a comprehensive examination and I had stitches in both my arm and my leg. When the dog clamped down on my bicep, it fractured the bone. There was a little hairline fracture and the bruising was intense and throbbing. It was a terrifying experience."The Role of the Bystander
Newport emphasizes the importance of a bystander's intervention. "It took a bystander at the dog park to step in and get the unattended dog off me. The police and an ambulance were called and I had to go to the hospital. I'm grateful for that person's help."The Dog's Background
She later learned that the dog was a foster dog that was left unattended while its caretaker was on the phone. "You have to be aware of your dog's behavior and whether they are suitable for a dog park. This incident could have been much worse if it had been an older person or someone younger. I have rescue dogs myself who have been through similar situations, so I do feel for the dog."Newport and her husband Todd Bradley took responsibility for the dog's treatment and made sure it was placed in a proper home with a better environment. "We wanted to do the right thing and ensure the dog's well-being."Healing and Moving Forward
Now, Newport is on the road to recovery. "I'm 'healed' now and working with someone to prevent scarring from the bites. Even as a dog lover, I was terrified of dogs for a long time after the attack. But the most important thing is that the dog is doing well and I'm doing well too. I didn't press charges because I wanted to focus on moving forward and healing."Never miss a story - sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
