Rice from Casper: Christmas Music on Her Playlist This Year
2024-12-11
Christmas is that time of the year when we embrace the spirit of the season through various musical expressions. From traditional hymns to modern interpretations, there's a song for every mood and taste. In this edition, I'll share some of the Christmas tunes that have been making my playlist this year.

Uncover the Hidden Gems of Christmas Music

Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Eve – Sarajevo 12-24

Imagine a powerful musical journey that combines the might of an orchestra with the electrifying sounds of synths, cello, and gnarly guitars. The Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Christmas Eve – Sarajevo 12-24" is just that - a medley of two beloved Christmas tunes, "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen" and "Carol of the Bells". This side project of members from the heavy metal band Savatage takes us on an intense instrumental ride that sets the tone for the holiday season.

It's not just a song; it's an experience that fills the air with festive cheer and leaves us craving for more. The seamless blend of different instruments creates a unique sound that is both captivating and enchanting.

Xmas Time is Here Again - My Morning Jacket

As Christmas time makes its grand return, this song by My Morning Jacket brings a simple yet retro-tinged holiday message. The lyrics, "Christmas time is here again. All this joy for girls and boys. Life was bad, but now is good. Love is right, I think we should", capture the essence of the season with a touch of nostalgia.

It's a song that makes us remember the joy and simplicity of Christmas past, while also looking forward to the present. The laid-back melody and heartfelt lyrics make it a perfect addition to any Christmas playlist.

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel - Punch Brothers

If you've been following my previous Holiday Music columns, you'll know that "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" is my favorite non-secular Christmas Carol. The Punch Brothers' country/bluegrass rendition of this classic is a true delight.

With the addition of fiddle, mandolin, and banjo, the song takes on a whole new life. The rich tones and harmonious melodies of these instruments create a warm and inviting atmosphere that is perfect for the holiday season. It's a must-listen for any Christmas music enthusiast.

Christmas is Going to the Dogs - Eels

Well, it seems that Christmas is taking a rather unconventional turn with this song by Eels. "Christmas is going to the dogs. We'd rather have chew toys than Yule logs. And things aren't looking very good, it's true. So I'll just lay here and chew."

The lyrics paint a humorous picture of a Christmas that is a bit off-kilter. But despite the somewhat strange theme, the song has a charm of its own. It's a unique take on the holiday season that adds a touch of whimsy to the mix.

Gabriel's Message - Sting

In 1987, the album "A Very Special Christmas" was released, with proceeds benefiting Special Olympics. Sting's haunting contribution to this collection is one that stands out. His soulful voice and the gentle melody create a sense of peace and hope.

It's a song that touches the heart and reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas. Sting's talent shines through in this performance, making it a memorable addition to the holiday music canon.

Mamacita, Donde Esta Santa Claus? - Guster

Guster captures the anxiety and anticipation of waiting for Santa Claus with their fun and laid-back Latin-loungy ditty. The lyrics, "Mamacita, ¿dónde está Santa Claus? ¿Dónde está Santa Claus? And the toys that he will leave? Mamacita, oh, where is Santa Claus? I look for him because it's Christmas Eve", bring a sense of playfulness to the holiday season.

The combination of Latin rhythms and catchy melodies makes this song a standout. It's a great way to get into the Christmas spirit and add a touch of international flavor to the festivities.

O Holy Night - Apocalyptica

Usually known for covering hardcore bands like Metallica, Apocalyptica surprises us with their peaceful performance of the holiday staple "O Holy Night". The classical musicians bring a new dimension to this beloved song, infusing it with a sense of tranquility and beauty.

The cellos create a rich and resonant sound that adds depth to the lyrics. It's a version of the song that is both familiar and refreshing, making it a favorite among many Christmas music lovers.

Krampus - Alternative Ulster

If you've been a bit naughty this year, you might want to beware of old Krampus. This Celtic punk Christmas tune by Alternative Ulster is a little inappropriate, but it's also a lot of fun. With the addition of bagpipes, it's a unique and spirited take on the holiday season.

The lyrics, "If you've been a little prick, you'll get no gifts from Old St. Nick. If all you do is bitch and fuss, best beware of old Krampus", add a touch of humor and edge to the song. It's a reminder that even during the holidays, there can be a bit of mischief.

Silent Night - Ekimi

I'm not sure how to categorize this song. It's jazz, but not your typical peppy jazz. "Silent Night" by Ekimi has a soothing quality that is truly unique. The gentle melodies and mellow tones create a peaceful atmosphere that is perfect for relaxation.

I find myself listening to this song over and over again, not just during Christmastime. It has a calming effect that helps to soothe the soul and bring a sense of tranquility to the holiday season.

Sleigh Ride - The Brian Setzer Orchestra

This song is always a favorite among people during the holidays. The big band rendition by The Brian Setzer Orchestra is a true classic. It has a festive energy that makes you want to reach for a martini (or a spiced cider) and put on your favorite Christmas sweater.

The lively melodies and energetic instrumentation create a sense of joy and merriment. It's a song that brings people together and gets them in the holiday spirit.

As we celebrate the season, there are countless songs to choose from. Whether you prefer traditional hymns or modern interpretations, there's a song out there that will touch your heart and make this Christmas truly special. So go ahead, find your favorites on YouTube, Spotify, or Apple Music, or hit downtown's Sonic Rainbow for Holiday CDs and albums. Happy and Merry Christmas to all!
