Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner's Dispute with Lin-Manuel Miranda
2024-12-19
Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner have found themselves at odds with Lin-Manuel Miranda over a rather interesting matter. In Disney's new musical prequel Mufasa: The Lion King, despite the original songs by Miranda, these two actors, who reprised their roles as Pumbaa and Timon from the 2019 photorealistic Lion King remake, were left out of the singing action. This has led to some rather humorous exchanges between them.

The Tale of Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and Lin-Manuel Miranda's Musical Feud

Section 1: The Disappointment of Not Getting a Song

46-year-old Billy Eichner playfully tells PEOPLE, "Lin-Manuel Miranda had the audacity not to write us a song. And we are furious." He continues, "We were really hoping to get a song in the movie." 42-year-old Seth Rogen also protests, saying, "I'm as good a singer as The Rock. That I will attest, that I maintain. So if The Rock's getting multiple Lin-Manuel songs, I can get one." Eichner agrees, adding that despite the setback, they did manage a little musical moment.

Section 2: The Duo's Improv in the Movie

Just like in the 1994 animated original and 2019 remake, Timon and Pumbaa are a wisecracking duo in Mufasa. They listen to and interrupt the tale of the titular lion from John Kani's mandrill Rafiki. Eichner explains that they improvised a lot during the recording, and a surprising amount of that ad libbing made it into the movie and was animated. Their impromptu duet was one such moment. Rogen quips, "We improvised our own song, which I think Lin is going to take credit for." Eichner jokes that Miranda might "probably submit that for the Academy Awards. And then win based on our lyrics."

Section 3: The Singing Ensemble in the Prequel

In the musical prequel, singing Miranda's songs are Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, and more. While Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner may not have gotten a moment as grand as "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?", Eichner is proud of the comedic duo's "spontaneity" together in the voiceover booth. He says, "That's pretty rare in this big epic Disney family movie. To have that type of raw improv make it to the screen is quite unusual."Mufasa: The Lion King is now in theaters on December 20. Directed by Barry Jenkins and written by Jeff Nathanson, it stars Pierre as Mufasa and Harrison as Taka a.k.a. Scar.
