The excitement was palpable at the Red Baron Arena and Expo as skaters prepared for the annual figure skating extravaganza. Skaters from the Southwest Figure Skating Club and Marshall Community Services were abuzz with anticipation, despite some nervous energy. Participants like Hadli Nelson and Jaeda Nelson expressed a mix of anxiety and enthusiasm about their performance in "Skating Through Music City." However, they agreed that the camaraderie and friendships formed through figure skating made it all worthwhile. "You get to meet people from all over," Jaeda remarked, highlighting the social aspect of the sport.
Show director Jodi Schreurs was busy orchestrating the event, ensuring everything ran smoothly. This year's show introduced several exciting firsts, including the use of country music as the theme and performances by the skating coaches themselves. "We try to choose songs that resonate with the audience," Schreurs explained, emphasizing the importance of audience engagement. Over 40 participants, ranging from young skaters to seasoned coaches, took part in the program. Evea Powers noted that performing alongside friends and family added an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience. The highlight for many was watching guest skater Abigail Ingham from the Sioux Falls Figure Skating Club dazzle on the ice. Her performance served as inspiration for the younger skaters.
The hard work and dedication put into the routines shone through during the show. For some, like Hadli Nelson, the most memorable moment was lying down on the ice during a routine set to Alabama’s “Mountain Music.” Others, such as Evea Powers, found personal meaning in their solos. Powers performed to the song "Cowboy Take Me Away," which held special significance as it reminded her of growing up with her fellow skaters. As a junior, this year marked her second-to-last show, making it bittersweet. Yet, the bonds formed over years of skating together made these moments even more precious. "These girls are like my sisters," she said, underscoring the deep connections forged within the skating community.
This annual event not only showcased the talents of local skaters but also fostered a sense of unity and support among participants. It highlighted the value of perseverance, teamwork, and shared experiences in creating lasting memories. Through the joy of skating, the community came together to celebrate each other's achievements and look forward to future opportunities to grow and thrive together.
