Snoop Dogg's Daughter Cori on Lupus, Depression & a Dark Space
2024-12-08
In a revealing turn of events, Snoop Dogg's daughter Cori Broadus has bravely opened up about her health struggles. At just 25 years old, she has shared deeply personal stories about her lupus diagnosis at the age of 6 and the profound impact it has had on her mental health over the years. In the premiere episode of the E! docuseries "Snoop's Fatherhood: Cori & Wayne's Story", she courageously spoke about the challenges she faced, from constantly going to the doctor and taking blood pressure medications to reaching a dark place during the pandemic when she even considered suicide. According to the Mayo Clinic, lupus is an autoimmune disease that attacks healthy tissues and has no cure, often making diagnosis difficult due to similar symptoms to other diseases.

Dealing with Lupus and Its Effects

Cori, who shares a special bond with her father Snoop, 53, and his wife Shante Broadus, has been through a rollercoaster of emotions. She vividly recalled in the episode how being young and sick with lupus was extremely hard. "Since a little girl I’ve always been depressed, I’ve always been ‘why me?’ " she said. The constant visits to the doctor and the burden of medications took a toll on her. And when COVID hit, it sent her into a deep, dark space. But she has shown remarkable strength in facing these challenges. She also shared how her fiancé Wayne Duece has been a pillar of support since they started dating. "I was in a mental facility because I tried to commit suicide in 2021," she revealed. This shows the importance of having a strong support system during difficult times.

Finding a Way Through Work

In an effort to cope, Cori threw herself into work with the launch of her cosmetics line, Choc Factory. "I was like, ‘Okay girl, you gotta get out of this s—,’ " she recalled. This shows her determination to overcome her struggles and find a purpose in life. By focusing on her work, she was able to distract herself and start to heal.

Managing Lupus and Mental Health

Elsewhere in the episode, Cori spoke with her best friend Itali Miller about how she manages her lupus and takes care of her mental health. She shared that she has been off her medications for four or five months now and her labs look better than ever. "I’m still very, very tired, but my body doesn’t ache as much," she said. This shows that with the right approach and support, it is possible to manage the symptoms of lupus and improve one's quality of life.Cori has always been candid about her medical issues and treatments. In January this year, she revealed that she experienced a "severe" stroke, which led her and Duece to put their wedding plans on hold. This shows that health issues can have a significant impact on every aspect of one's life.In September 2023, she made the choice to forgo medications and opt for holistic treatments like exercising more and consuming herbs, sea mosses, and teas. "I’ve been good, better than I’ve ever been," she said at the time. She explained that her regimented routine with medications was making her feel "like I was going insane." By choosing a different path, she is taking control of her health and well-being.She added, "I have days where I’m sick, but I’m still blessed and able to do what I love to do and to tell my story. But then there’s days I’m like, ‘Wow, I wish I wasn’t sick. What would my life be if I was just a normal girl?’ It’s part of being human. You’re going to have bad days, you’re not going to always have good days."If you or someone you know is considering suicide, please contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988, text “STRENGTH” to the Crisis Text Line at 741741 or go to 988lifeline.org.Snoop’s Fatherhood: Cori and Wayne’s Story is available to stream on Peacock.
