Sofia Coppola Launches Book Imprint, Tributes 'The Virgin Suicides'
2024-12-13
Sofia Coppola, the renowned Oscar-winning filmmaker, is making waves in the world of book publishing. Her latest venture, the launch of her own book imprint, Important Flowers, under the U.K. publisher Mack, showcases her diverse creative pursuits.

Paying Tribute to Iconic Films

In a December 12 interview with Vogue, Coppola revealed this exciting news. The imprint's first publication will be a behind-the-scenes photo book of her debut film, 1999's The Virgin Suicides. While working on her 2023 photography book Archive, she came across hundreds of photos from the set taken by the late Corinne Day. These photos were so captivating that they warranted a separate book."It was a wonderful discovery," Coppola said. "I'm a massive fan of Corinne's work, and being able to share these photos with the world is a true honor. Kirsten Dunst's portrayal in The Virgin Suicides was truly remarkable, and these photos capture that essence perfectly."The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? We all worked hard that summer in Toronto, and it was a special time."

Visual History and Personal Planners

Coppola will also publish a 500-page "visual history" of French fashion house Chanel Haute Couture. This project allows her to showcase her love for fashion and design. Additionally, she is creating a daily planner that is designed to look like her own personal diary."This planner is very important to me," Coppola explained. "I need to see my week visually, on paper, and it has to be horizontal. Mack was very receptive to my idea of creating a planner exactly how I've always wanted it, on really pretty paper."

Supporting New Photographers

One of Coppola's main goals with Important Flowers is to support new photographers. She has ideas for future publications, including a book of vintage advertisements and reprinting out-of-print titles."I only want to put out books that I would be proud to give to someone," Coppola said. "There's a lot of heart in these projects because they are centered around subjects I care about deeply."

Potential Documentary about Marie Antoinette

Though Coppola has a diverse range of publishing plans, she also has potential plans to create more work celebrating her movies. Specifically, she is considering a documentary about her film Marie Antoinette, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2026."We're just getting started on that project and trying to make sense of the footage," she said. "I've only looked at a little bit of it so far, but it's amazing how much of it focuses on the costumes, flowers, food, and sets. I'm working hard to shape it into something tangible. I hope the footage isn't too embarrassing, but it's a great opportunity to relive those moments on set."Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
