In the final stretch of the spring semester, the University of Rhode Island transforms into a vibrant hub of musical expression with an extensive lineup of performances throughout April. This series offers something for everyone, ranging from intimate student recitals to grand orchestral productions, culminating in a full opera and even a unique film score premiere.
Among the highlights is the presentation of Alfred Hitchcock's 1927 silent masterpiece "The Lodger – a Story of the London Fog," accompanied by a live original score. Performed on April 11 in the Fine Arts Center’s Concert Hall, this event features renowned artists bringing Joe Williams' dynamic composition to life. URI Assistant Teaching Professor Adam Levin praises Williams' work, noting its vivid connection to Hitchcock's dramatic storytelling. Levin, along with his chamber group The Great Necks Guitar Trio, previously showcased this score and plans to share it with local audiences, celebrating the fusion of cinematic and musical arts.
Further enriching the cultural landscape, URI's Opera Workshop collaborates with the Concert Choir and Symphony Orchestra to stage scenes from Goethe's "Faust." Directed by Devon Russo, this U.S. premiere introduces Robert Schumann's theatrical work to new audiences, linking Romantic era themes with contemporary societal changes. With elaborate costumes and sets crafted by the production team, the performance promises an immersive experience. Other notable concerts include the Jazz Big Band's tribute to jazz legends, the Wind Ensemble's diverse repertoire, and the University Chorus exploring the emotional journey through music.
The month-long celebration underscores the importance of fostering artistic expression and interdisciplinary collaboration. Through these performances, the university not only showcases the talents of its students and faculty but also invites the community to partake in a shared appreciation for the arts. Such initiatives inspire creativity and unity, reminding us of the transformative power of music and performance in connecting people across generations and cultures.
