Star Trek Fan's License Plate Woes: Traffic Tickets & Trekkie Blame
2024-12-07
Star Trek fans have always been a unique bunch, and Beda Koorey's story is a prime example. With the 2025 TV schedule on the horizon and new Star Trek shows on the way, Koorey's situation stands out. An old woman in New York found herself in a world of trouble due to a novelty license plate.

The Star Trek License Plate Saga and Its Consequences

How a Simple License Plate Led to a World of Woes

When Beda Koorey got a license plate that said NCC-1701, she thought it was just a fun joke, comparing her car to the Starfleet flagship Enterprise. But little did she know the hardships that would follow. CBS News reported that she has been receiving tickets and fines from around the nation, with supposed Trekkies replacing their license plates with novelty ones. This includes parking tickets, speeding tickets, school zone violations, and even more serious crimes. For instance, she received a phone call from Ohio where a police chief was looking for plates involved in a robbery. It's clear that while Trekkies may be used to the idea of a post-scarcity society, they can't just steal money. Koorey gave up her plates four years ago, yet the government agencies still sent the fees to her. This has put a sour taste in her mouth about enjoying Trek with a Paramount+ subscription.

The Illegal Side of License Plate Replacements

Replacing your license plate with fraudulent ones is not only illegal but also goes against the values of Starfleet. It seems that people are obtaining these plates on Amazon, taking advantage of a popular tag. While it's not a given that those doing this are Star Trek fans, it's still a concerning trend. Beda Koorey has to suffer the consequences, constantly mailing out letters to various government institutions in different states. It's a situation that is far from ideal. She is not on the line for any money, but the hassle and stress of dealing with these issues are significant. I can't imagine having to go through such a back-and-forth with a government agency.

The Importance of Choosing Wisely

If there's a message here for Star Trek fans, it's that crime is bad and they shouldn't get an Enterprise license plate. There are so many other great The Next Generation episodes to reference, and it would be much more thrilling to see a Spock plate or one of the other best Trek characters.Hopefully, with more Star Trek content on the way in 2025, people can focus on watching the show and avoid getting involved in vehicle-related crimes. I'm excited for the new season of Strange New Worlds and the premiere of the Section 31 movie.
