SZA Honors Mac Miller's Legacy with Emotional Tribute on Social Media
2025-01-17

Following the release of Mac Miller's posthumous album, Balloonerism, singer SZA took to social media to honor her late friend. The 35-year-old artist expressed her deep gratitude and admiration for Miller, who believed in her talent before she achieved mainstream success. SZA encouraged fans to stream the album immediately, highlighting its significance. The announcement of the album came from the Mac Miller Estate in November, stating that it would be released on January 17 via Warner Records. This project was created around the time of Miller’s Faces in 2014 and showcases his versatility as an artist. The family emphasized the importance of this work to Miller and decided to release an official version due to its long-standing presence in the fan community.

Mac Miller, whose real name was Malcolm McCormick, passed away tragically in 2018 at the age of 26 due to an accidental drug overdose. Since then, his family has worked tirelessly to preserve his musical legacy. Balloonerism is a testament to the creative period during which Miller was also working on other projects like Watching Movies with the Sound Off and Delusional Thomas. The album features only two collaborations: one with SZA and another with Miller’s alter ego, Delusional Thomas. These tracks reflect the artistic ambition that transcended genre boundaries, underscoring Miller's innovative spirit.

SZA and Miller shared a close bond dating back to their early careers. In 2014, they performed together at Red Bull Studios in Los Angeles, where Miller produced two tracks on SZA’s EP Z. At the time, he praised her immense talent, saying she didn't realize how amazing she was. Following Miller's passing, SZA continued to pay tribute to him, performing at a memorial concert alongside other notable artists. On the second anniversary of his death, she expressed her love and appreciation for him, acknowledging the profound impact he had on her life and career.

The release of Balloonerism not only honors Miller’s memory but also provides fans with a glimpse into his creative evolution. It stands as a powerful reminder of his belief in others and his unwavering commitment to music. For SZA, this moment serves as both a celebration of friendship and a tribute to an artist who saw potential in her when few others did. The album invites listeners to explore Miller’s multifaceted artistry and remember the indelible mark he left on the music industry.
