Tapped Out Prank Stars: Channel 4's Linear Celebrity Prank Show
2024-11-21
Channel 4 is making waves with its unique approach to entertainment. In a groundbreaking move, a celebrity prank show that initially emerged on their YouTube channel is now being piloted on linear TV. Tapped Out Prank Stars brings together a star-studded cast including rapper ArrDee, comedian Fatiha El-Ghorri, and JLS singer Aston Merrygold. These celebrities take on extreme challenges in front of a studio audience, pushing themselves to their limits. The show features chaotic twists and turns that keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

The Concept of Tapped Out Prank Stars

Tapped Out is hosted by Nella Rose and has already seen the likes of Love Island star Chloe Burrows. Celebrities are pushed to their breaking point with tricky prank challenges. The longer they can endure before deciding to "Tap Out," the better their performance. The one who lasts the longest in the increasingly embarrassing tasks becomes the champion, while the loser faces a final forfeit. This unique format has captured the attention of viewers, with the first episode on YouTube amassing 1.5 million views on the 600,000-subscriber Channel 4.0, which launched in 2022.

The show's producers, Wall of Entertainment, along with GroupM Motion Entertainment as co-producers, have put together a team of talented executives. Tafara Makopa, Percelle Ascott, Joivan Wade, and Christopher Barbour are the show's executive producers, with Ben Hardy as the director. Martin Oxley, Head of Formats & Entertainment (UK), is the Executive Producer for GroupM Motion Entertainment. The programme was funded by Channel 4 and GroupM Motion Entertainment's Diverse Indies Fund, which aims to support small and medium-sized ethnically diverse-owned independent production companies.

The Significance of the Transfer to Linear

This move marks the first time a Channel 4 YouTube format has made the transition to linear TV. It shows Channel 4's willingness to explore new avenues and reach a wider audience. The pilot is likely to air around Christmas, adding to the excitement. Channel 4's Cimran Shah and Evie Buckley have praised the show, calling it "one of the most boisterous and brave shows on Channel 4.0 with millions viewing across our YouTube and social platforms." They are excited to take the wildest elements of the series and create an unpredictable all-star edition for Channel 4.

Channel 4.0 is a key part of the Gogglebox network's digital strategy, with other shows like Worst in Class, Baddest in the World, and 20K Play. COO Jonathan Allan views YouTube as a distribution channel on par with Sky or Virgin Media, seeing it as incremental to streaming and linear. This news comes at a time when YouTube is emerging as a breeding ground for formats, as seen with Netflix greenlighting a second season of The Sidemen's reality series Inside.
