Taylor Swift Laser Show Kicks Off New Era at MOSI's Digital Dome
2025-05-08

On May 15, the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) in Tampa is set to dazzle audiences with its inaugural laser music spectacle. This unique event will take place within the newly opened Saunders Planetarium & Digital Dome Theatre, one of the largest planetariums in the United States. The highlight of the evening will feature the musical genius of pop sensation Taylor Swift, whose iconic tracks will illuminate the digital dome with vibrant visuals and synchronized lighting effects. Tickets are priced affordably at $10 for non-members and $8 for members, making it accessible for fans of all ages. With seating capacity exceeding 300, this immersive experience offers an innovative way to enjoy Swift’s timeless melodies.

The renovation of the former IMAX Saunders Planetarium has transformed it into a state-of-the-art venue since its closure in 2017. Since reopening on April 1, there has been a significant surge in attendance, increasing by over 15%. Moreover, visitors have shown keen interest in adding extra planetarium shows to their visits. John Graydon Smith, MOSI President and CEO, noted that guests often attend multiple performances during their visit due to the variety of daily offerings. The decision to reintroduce laser shows was inspired by their past popularity decades ago. As part of this revival, Taylor Swift’s music became the ideal choice for testing the new laser system.

Smith shared his excitement about incorporating Swift’s music into the program, acknowledging her ability to energize any setting. He recalled how his daughters were among the first to witness the trial run of the system, experiencing firsthand the enchanting fusion of sound and light. Beyond mere entertainment, Swift’s lyrical content lends itself beautifully to creating multi-sensory narratives. Her references to celestial bodies and universal themes resonate deeply within the context of a planetarium setting. For instance, lines from songs like “Mary’s Song” and “Snow on the Beach” evoke vivid imagery perfectly suited for laser displays.

In addition to the Taylor Swift showcase, MOSI plans to expand its repertoire with additional musical acts such as Pink Floyd and Queen. These selections promise diverse visual experiences characterized by dynamic patterns and vivid color schemes. While maintaining its educational mission, MOSI aims to broaden its appeal through innovative programming and potential special events including weddings. According to Smith, the digital dome represents a pivotal chapter in the museum’s evolution, enhancing both capacity and versatility.

As MOSI embarks on this transformative journey, embracing Taylor Swift’s thematic "eras," it signifies a fresh beginning for the institution. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and creative presentation methods, the museum seeks to captivate broader audiences while preserving its commitment to education and community engagement. Whether attending a star-filled concert or exploring cinematic adventures projected across the expansive eight-story dome, visitors can anticipate unforgettable encounters at MOSI's latest attraction.
