Teen Transforms Thrown-Away Holiday Decor into Charity Light Display
2024-12-18
Andrew Reid, a 19-year-old from East Northport on Long Island, is making a significant impact this Christmas. His fourth-year giant and dazzling holiday light display uses only old decorations that were once thrown away. This year's "Misfit Island Christmas Spectacular" features an astonishing 100,000 lights and over 500 community-donated decorations. The project's goal is to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House, which offers housing to children battling pediatric cancer and other serious illnesses.

Reid's Passion for Helping

Reid's love for helping others is evident. He is pursuing a career as a paramedic and believes in making people happy. That's why he decided to create this light display and raise money for kids with cancer. As he said, "I love to help people out. I'm going to school to be a paramedic. And I like to make people happy, everyone knows that, so I was like — why not do a display and raise money for kids with cancer as well."

The Display's Magnificence

Footage shows every inch of Reid's home covered in colorful, bright lights. Along the path, there are figures of Santa and snowmen, creating a magical atmosphere. It's a sight to behold and brings joy to all who see it. Reid began this annual tradition during the pandemic as a competition with his family. They discovered holiday décor dumped near their home, and Reid couldn't resist taking a polar bear home and refurbishing it. From there, he taught himself how to fully refurbish holiday decorations and established this yearly tradition.

Call for Community Involvement

This year, Reid is calling on visitors to get involved. He invites them to add an ornament to his "Misfit Tree." As he told Fox 5 New York, "If anyone wants to bring their Christmas tree ornaments they could put it on the tree and then your ornaments will be part of my display, and you could see it every year." This not only adds to the charm of the display but also involves the community in a meaningful way.Reid's ability to figure out how electricity works and understand the intricacies of holiday decorations is truly remarkable. As he said, "I was able to figure out how electricity works, how positive and negative works, how the neutral works on all these things. Now, just seeing it, I know the problem with these wires: what not to touch … It just comes easy to me." His dedication and skills have made this holiday light display a success.
