Uncover the Best of 2024's Movie Scene

Twisters

"Twisters" was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year. This 2024 remake of the 1996 classic drew inspiration from its predecessor while adding its own charm. Glen Powell's charisma and the excellent soundtrack truly elevated the movie. Kate Carter, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, embarked on a mission to implement new technology to track storms and save lives in Oklahoma. Working alongside her old friend Javi, played by Anthony Ramos, and newcomer Tyler, played by Glen Powell, they used her old technology to minimize the destruction caused by tornadoes. This feel-good film became a summer hit and is now a classic addition to family movie nights.

The action and excitement of "Twisters" kept audiences on the edge of their seats from start to finish. It was a movie that brought out the best in its cast and crew, leaving a lasting impression on viewers.

Anora

"Anora" emerged as a clear Oscar Best Picture contender. The story follows Brooklyn adult entertainer Ani, played by Mikey Madison, and her complex relationship with Russian rich boy Vanya, played by Mark Eydelshteyn. From their blooming relationship to their eventual divorce, this Cinderella story is filled with smart writing, unique characters and an exciting narrative. The complex characters in the film are easy to fall in love with, and the writing and directing by Sean Baker create a jarring yet captivating ride.

The film seamlessly transitions between comedy and heartbreak, with Madison and Eydelshteyn delivering stellar performances. "Anora" is a movie that sticks with you long after the credits roll.

Challengers

In May, Zendaya, Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist treated us to "Challengers", a steamy match full of tennis, lovers and enemies. The film follows a complex love triangle between Tashi, Patrick and Art, played by Zendaya, Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist respectively. It jumps around in time, showing the different stages of their relationships. Unlike most love triangles, this film plays with the dynamics between the characters in a seductive way.

The leads' performances and the intense relationships in the film are enticing. With impressive cinematography and choreography, "Challengers" keeps the audience engaged from start to finish.

We Live In Time

"We Live In Time" tells the unchronological story of Almut, played by Florence Pugh, and Tobias, played by Andrew Garfield. As they meet, fall in love, start a family and face the tragic events of Almut's cancer, the film explores the daily lives of ordinary people in a unique way. Almut is a fully developed character, and Garfield and Pugh have a deep chemistry that draws the audience in.

The film's portrayal of love and tragedy is both powerful and moving. It shows the strength and resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Wicked

A late contender but a worthy one, "Wicked" stunned audiences over Thanksgiving weekend. Starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, the film broke box office records and became the highest grossing movie based on a Broadway musical in just over a week. The stunning choreography, impressive acting performances and timely messages made it a must-see.

Erivo's acting in particular was outstanding, especially in the intimate and intense close-ups. Coupled with Grande's precise physical comedy and Alice Brooks' incredible cinematography, "Wicked" offers an almost three-hour-long experience that is truly worth it.
