Tragedy Strikes Colorado: Wife Finds Husband Buried in Avalanche
2025-01-16

A devastating avalanche in the rugged mountains of Colorado has claimed the life of an experienced backcountry skier. On a fateful day in early January, Don Moden Jr., a seasoned adventurer, was caught in an avalanche while skiing on Red Mountain Number 3 near Red Mountain Pass. The incident left his wife in shock as she discovered his body buried under three feet of snow.

When concerns mounted over her husband's delayed return, Don’s wife took immediate action. She alerted authorities and ventured into the wilderness herself to search for him. Upon reaching the slope where Don had planned to ski, she spotted signs of an avalanche and initiated a transceiver search. Despite the challenging conditions, she managed to locate his signal and pinpoint his location using an avalanche probe. Her desperate cries for help were soon answered by nearby backcountry skiers and members of the Ouray Mountain Rescue Team (OMRT), who rushed to assist in the rescue effort.

Don Moden Jr. was not only an avid skier but also a former member of the OMRT, where he made significant contributions to both the team and the community. His exceptional skills and dedication set a high standard that continues to be honored. Known affectionately as "The Don," he left an indelible mark on everyone he worked with. The OMRT expressed their deep sorrow, stating that Don will forever remain in their thoughts and in the history of their team.

The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers associated with backcountry skiing. While the sport offers thrilling experiences in unmarked or unpatrolled areas, it also requires careful planning and adherence to safety protocols. Traveling in groups is generally safer than venturing alone, as a well-equipped group can provide more resources for rescue if something goes wrong. In recent years, solo backcountry travelers have accounted for a significant portion of avalanche-related fatalities in Colorado, underscoring the importance of making informed decisions about route selection and travel conditions.
