Despite immediate medical intervention, she succumbed to her injuries on December 28th. The Incident Unfolds in a Busy Shopping Center

On a chilly Monday afternoon at The Avenue Mall in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the bustling LongHorn Steakhouse parking lot witnessed a devastating accident. Cathy Pendergrass, a resident of Warrenton, Virginia, was helping a man with limited mobility enter a specially adapted Honda CRV. This vehicle had been modified for use by mail carriers and featured controls on the passenger side. As Pendergrass assisted outside the car, another woman occupied the driver’s seat, preparing to move the vehicle to allow the man in the wheelchair to board safely.

Unbeknownst to all, the man, who had recently suffered a stroke and had limited sensation on his left side, accidentally pressed the accelerator pedal while attempting to enter the SUV. The vehicle lurched backward, spinning out of control. It collided with a parked car, trapping Pendergrass between the two vehicles. The runaway SUV continued to reverse, crashing into two more parked cars before finally coming to a stop. Emergency services arrived promptly, transporting Pendergrass to Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital in critical condition.
