Trisha Paytas' Broadway Dream: From Delusional to Reality
2024-12-11
Trisha Paytas, the renowned YouTuber and podcast host, is set to grace Broadway with a one-night-only performance. This dream opportunity has been a long time coming, as she shares how her internet career's ups and downs, along with her deep passion for theater, led her here. "This is going to be a production. We’re having ensembles, tricks and magic… It’s bigger than life," she teases.

From YouTube to Broadway

Fresh off appearances on Saturday Night Live and a string of successful holiday live shows, Trisha Paytas, now 36, is ready to take the Broadway stage. She officially announced this exciting venture while performing in her "Trishmas Live" show at the Beacon Theatre on Tuesday, Dec. 9.With a career that started in the digital realm, Paytas has always had a unique way of entertaining. Her passion for theater, however, has been a constant. Growing up, she played ensemble parts in school productions like Annie and The Music Man but never landed a starring role. Undeterred, she took matters into her own hands and created high-production recreations of beloved musical theater tunes. Each video was a blend of hilarity and heartwarming moments, as she believed her efforts would lead to a professional theater role. "I know it sounds, like, so delusional," she admits, aware of her untrained status. "But what I have is passion. Maybe not talent, but I have a lot of passion… I’m not, like, Sutton Foster."

The Journey to Broadway

Produced by Kobi Kassal and George Strus, Trisha Paytas’ Big Broadway Dream was initially a joke for April Fool’s Day. The producers saw the fanfare around the prank announcement and decided to make it a reality. They got the date and the theater, and Paytas was in disbelief. For Paytas, this is a major dream come true. She has "wanted to be in that world" since watching Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat starring Donny Osmond as a child. Now, she's diving full-force into serious preparation, including vocal lessons, excited to see where her talent can take her.

Family and Inspiration

Not only does Paytas get to fulfill her Broadway ambitions, but she also gets to share this moment with her husband Moses Hacmon and their daughters, 2-year-old Malibu Barbie and Elvis, born in June. Malibu already loves to sing, and Paytas hopes to show her that anyone can achieve their dreams, regardless of talent or connections.Looking back on her internet career, Paytas is aware that this opportunity might not have been possible a few years ago. She used to be known for trolling and posting controversial content, but now she has rehabilitated her image by focusing on her mental health."I’m just so happy to be in a place where I can regulate my emotions," she says. "I owe a lot of it to my daughter [Malibu]. When she was born, I was like, ‘I don’t want to be a bad person for her. I don’t want to embarrass her.'"

Looking Forward

Going forward, Paytas is taking her bucket list more seriously. She hopes to do more on the Broadway stage, whether it's on or off-Broadway, and even venture into movies. She loves that movie musicals are making a comeback and dreams of being a part of one.To the haters who never believed she could make it to Broadway, she offers a quote from Sweet Charity: "If they could see me now…"Tickets to see Trisha Paytas’ Big Broadway Dream in-person go on sale Dec. 13 via the show’s website, and fans can also purchase passes to watch a live stream of the performance online. All net proceeds will benefit the Entertainment Community Fund.
