In Season 1, "High Potential" has already experienced a couple of mini-hiatuses. Currently, its seventh episode aired on November 12 as a midseason finale, marking a rather lengthy gap for any TV show. Don't anticipate its return before the 2025 winter schedule kicks off. ABC announced its midseason schedule the day after the latest episode, revealing that Kaitlin Olson, Daniel Sunjata, Judy Reyes, and the rest of the LAPD crew will be back on primetime with new episodes starting on Tuesday, January 7, in a new timeslot at 9:00 p.m. ET. The remaining six episodes will have "Will Trent" Season 3 as a lead-in as "Dancing with the Stars" concludes by that point. "High Potential" will also serve as a lead-in itself in the back half of the season when "Nathan Fillion's The Rookie" returns for its Season 7 premiere at 10:00 p.m. ET. Given its early airtime and strong ratings, this bodes well for the future of the show.
It's important to note that "High Potential" is currently locked in with its 13-episode first season and won't be getting an additional episode order. This is due to scheduling strife from the 2023 strikes and Kaitlin Olson's involvement in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" Season 17 filming next to the "High Potential" sets.
While some may prefer Morgan and Karadec to get together romantically, I believe their non-confrontational and platonic work relationship avoids TV procedural tropes. I don't want to see Olson's Morgan and Taren Killam's Ludo back together immediately. Instead, I'm excited to see the show fulfill its promise of adding "Mayans M.C." vet JD Pardo as the precinct's new custodian Tom. Tom took Morgan's spot when her evidence-eyeing skills were recognized. It's clear that Tom has a thing for Morgan, and I'm glad the writers didn't rush into an awkward hook-up. Morgan tried to make something happen by giving Tom her number via a cheese-dust window smear, and he tried to call her even with the wrong digits. In the seventh episode, Tom stepped up and became a hero when Morgan's daughter got involved in a hostage situation and even got shot. He's already won some cool points with Morgan (and me). With Olson and Pardo's chemistry, this is the endgame goal for the first season. Although waiting six weeks for a TV show is a long time, "High Potential" episodes can be streamed with a Hulu subscription ahead of its January 7 return to ABC.
