Uptown Music Collective Unveils Nostalgic Tribute to Classic Movie Soundtracks
2025-01-10

In an exciting continuation of the 2024-2025 performance season, the Uptown Music Collective (UMC) is set to take audiences on a musical journey through cinema history with their upcoming show, "Music That Made the Movies: Soundtracks That Rock." Scheduled for January 25 at the Community Arts Center, this event promises to be a celebration of iconic film scores from the past few decades. The program, selected by public vote last summer, showcases the dedication and talent of the UMC’s Special Performance Group 1 students, who have spent months preparing to bring these timeless tracks to life.

A Journey Through Decades of Iconic Film Scores

On a crisp evening in late January, the Community Arts Center, located at 220 West Fourth Street, will host an unforgettable night of music that has shaped cinematic history. The Uptown Music Collective’s Special Performance Group 1 will perform beloved songs from some of the most memorable films of the '70s, '80s, and '90s. These young musicians, known for their exceptional talent and dedication, have spent over three months meticulously rehearsing hits like “Eye of the Tiger” from Rocky III, “Danger Zone” from Top Gun, and “I Will Always Love You” from The Bodyguard.

The concert, directed by senior Tixo Bower alongside Mackenzie Hakes and Matthew Bellino, aims to capture the magic of movies through sound. The leadership committee, comprised of UMC students, has worked tirelessly to ensure every detail is perfect, from the lighting and sound design to the seamless transitions between songs. In true UMC fashion, the students are not only performers but also the creative force behind the show, with younger members serving as stage technicians and spotlight operators.

This production marks a first for the Uptown Music Collective, blending diverse genres and eras into one cohesive performance. From disco classics to powerful ballads, the show promises to evoke nostalgia and transport audiences back to the golden age of movie soundtracks.

Founder and Executive Director Dave Brumbaugh expressed his enthusiasm for the event, highlighting the unique opportunity it presents for both the students and the audience. He emphasized the importance of combining the power of music with the magic of movies to create an experience that will leave a lasting impression.

Tickets for this special event are available exclusively through the Community Arts Center box office and website.

As a journalist covering arts and culture, I find this initiative particularly inspiring. It showcases the incredible potential of young artists to connect with and reinterpret classic works. The Uptown Music Collective's commitment to involving students in all aspects of production demonstrates the value of hands-on learning and creativity. This event not only celebrates the enduring influence of movie soundtracks but also highlights the next generation of musical talent. It’s a reminder that great art can inspire new generations while honoring the past.
