Utah's New State Flag Takes Center Stage in Celebrity Jeopardy! Finale
2025-04-17

In a thrilling episode of "Celebrity Jeopardy!", three competitors vied for the final spot in the championship round, showcasing their knowledge on diverse subjects ranging from Shakespearean plays to geographical insignia. ESPN/NFL analyst Mina Kimes, actor Sean Gunn, and entrepreneur Dave Friedberg were tested on their intellectual prowess. The game featured an intriguing clue about Utah’s redesigned state flag, which was unveiled in 2022 following a public design competition. Although Friedberg initially struggled, he ultimately clinched victory by correctly answering the final question, securing his place in the finals against comedian W. Kamau Bell and actor Robin Thede.

The episode began with a focus on Utah’s revamped state flag, featuring a beehive emblem that symbolizes Mormonism. Host Ken Jennings explained the significance of this iconography during the game. The new flag design incorporates elements such as a blue stripe representing Utah's skies and lakes, a white stripe symbolizing snow-capped peaks, and a red stripe honoring the state's iconic red rock formations. Despite mixed public reception, the flag has garnered attention both locally and nationally. Senator Daniel McCay celebrated its introduction at the Capitol in Salt Lake City earlier this year.

Throughout most of the semifinal match, the contest was tightly contested between Kimes and Gunn. However, Friedberg made a bold move in the Final Jeopardy round, wagering nearly all his points on a question about the Sarajevo Film Festival. His correct answer secured him the last spot in the finals. This marks not only Friedberg's personal triumph but also highlights the recurring references to Brigham Young University within the show's clues.

Host Ken Jennings, a BYU graduate, clarified in previous interviews that he does not influence the nature of these specific clues. Yet, the season featured multiple nods to BYU culture, including mentions of the university's honor code and even quarterback Jake Retzlaff during another tournament.

Audiences eagerly await the conclusion of "Celebrity Jeopardy!" when Friedberg competes against Bell and Thede on April 23rd. Following this event, fans can look forward to the third Masters Tournament premiering on April 30th, where top players will compete for substantial prizes and prestigious trophies.
