UW-Eau Claire's 50th Holiday Concert Moves to Pablo Center
2024-12-09
For half a century, the music department at UW-Eau Claire has been a source of holiday cheer with its annual concert. Zorn Arena on the campus served as the venue for all these years. But with the recent demolition of Zorn Arena, the show had to find a new home.

Challenges and Adaptations

This year, the concert moved to the Pablo Center. As John Stewart, the executive director, pointed out, this presented several challenges. "When we shifted to the Pablo Center, the stage couldn't accommodate more than four hundred musicians," he said.To make space for the performers on stage, the original format had to be modified. The ensembles and choir were divided into groups. One group would perform one part of the concert, and the other half would take the stage after the intermission. For the grand finale, choir members even encircled the audience, inspiring them to join in the singing.Although it might seem like a complex process, it still allowed the directors to achieve the concert's goal - to bring joy to the Chippewa Valley. This goal has remained steadfast for five decades.

Bonding and Stress Relief

Keeping this tradition alive is a gift not only for the audience but also for the student musicians. For many students, this time of the year is stressful with final exams approaching. Berat Fitzsimonds, one such student, shared that the concert provided an opportunity to bond with her peers and take a break from the academic pressure. "We all enjoy being together. It's a great way to unwind from studying for finals and working on projects," she said.

Fundraising for the Music Department

The Holiday Concert also plays a crucial role in raising funds for students in the music department at UWEC. Through ticket sales and donations, it helps support the educational and artistic endeavors of these students. This financial support enables them to pursue their passion for music and continue to create beautiful performances. The concert has become an integral part of the UW-Eau Claire community, bringing people together and spreading the joy of music. It is a testament to the dedication and talent of the music department and the students who participate in it.
