Village People to Perform at Trump's Inauguration, Emphasizing Unity Through Music
2025-01-15

The disco group Village People has announced its participation in the inauguration festivities of President-elect Donald Trump. In a recent statement, they expressed their commitment to performing despite knowing that some fans may not approve of this decision. The band highlighted the universal appeal of music and its potential to bridge divides, especially after a contentious election season. They emphasized that their song "Y.M.C.A." serves as a global anthem for unity and positivity.

Trump, who is known to be an admirer of the Village People, frequently played their hit "Y.M.C.A." at rallies and other events. Interestingly, the band had previously issued a cease-and-desist order regarding the use of another one of their songs, "Macho Man," but later withdrew it. Victor Willis, the only original member still with the group, explained on Fox & Friends that he decided to allow Trump's continued use of "Y.M.C.A." because of the president-elect's genuine fondness for the song and the fact that many artists were prohibiting him from using their music. Willis also mentioned that if asked, they would seriously consider performing live at the inauguration.

Music has the power to unite people across different backgrounds and beliefs. By choosing to perform at such a significant event, Village People aims to foster a sense of togetherness and optimism. This decision reflects the importance of setting aside political differences and focusing on common values that can bring individuals closer together. It is a reminder that in times of division, shared experiences like music can serve as a powerful force for unity and hope.
