"Wicked: Part Two Gets Upgraded Title to 'For Good' Before 2025 Release"
2024-12-16
Following the remarkable success of the film's release, Wicked: Part Two is set to receive an enhanced title change. This significant development has captured the attention of both fans and the industry. The second installment, directed by Jon M. Chu, will now be known as Wicked: For Good. Universal Pictures has confirmed that this highly anticipated movie will still hit theaters on its previously announced date of Friday, November 21, 2025.

Revealing the Title Change

Ariana Grande, who portrays Glinda in both editions, along with her costar Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba), took to Instagram to announce the title change. In a joint post on Monday, December 16, Grande captioned it with "You will be changed. Wicked: For Good, only in theaters November 21, 2025." Both women also shared the news on their Instagram Stories, adding a countdown with 11 months and four days remaining until Part Two arrives. This title change pays homage to a song sung in the musical, adding an extra layer of significance.

The Broadway musical version of the story is an adaptation of Gregory Maguire's 1995 book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The first part of the film, also an adaptation, was released ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday on November 22. This two-part approach allows for a more comprehensive telling of the story, as explained by Jon M. Chu in April 2022. He tweeted that it became clear that trying to fit the entire story of WICKED into a single film would do it justice.

Bringing the Story to Life

Screenwriter Winnie Holzman summed it up by stating that there was "too much story for one movie." With the release of a second movie, Chu, Universal Pictures, and the cast have the opportunity to delve deeper into the lives and journeys of these beloved characters. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will perform a duet in the movie that tells the story of how their feud turns to friendship, adding an emotional depth to the narrative.

In addition to Grande and Erivo, the movie also stars Bridgerton actor Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Aaron Teoh as Avaric, and Colin Michael Carmichael as Professor Nikidik. Each of these actors brings their unique talents to the story, creating a rich and diverse on-screen experience.

Potential for a New Character

Although Wicked: For Good has already been filmed, Chu recently told Variety that Dorothy might make an appearance in the sequel. In the Broadway show, Dorothy is around, and there has to be an intersection between the two worlds. While fans caught a glimpse of her from behind in the first film, Chu remains coy about whether she will be a full-fledged character in movie two. He believes that everyone should have their own interpretation of Dorothy, and he will leave that up to Part Two to explore.
