Wildfires Devastate Palisades: A Family's Life in Ruins
2025-01-11

The wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles have left an indelible mark on the lives of many residents, including Andrea Heindel and her parents. For decades, the family thrived in their beloved Palisades neighborhood, celebrating milestones and building a life together. However, the recent fires have obliterated both their homes, leaving only remnants of cherished memories. The devastation extends beyond property loss, as important personal items and documents were left behind during the hasty evacuation. Despite the challenges, the family remains grateful for their safety and is now focused on rebuilding their lives.

Andrea Heindel's family history in the Palisades dates back to 1971 when her parents, Michael Horusicky Sr. and Jana Horusicky, purchased their first home on Fiske Street. Having fled Czechoslovakia during the Soviet invasion in 1968, they found refuge in Paradise Cove before settling in the Palisades. Michael, a skilled mason, established a reputable construction business in 1970, while Jana worked as a lab technician at the VA Hospital in Westwood. Over the years, the family expanded their presence in the community by acquiring another home on Edgar Street. In 2012, Andrea and her husband Jason bought the neighboring house, creating a close-knit living arrangement.

The fire struck unexpectedly on January 7th. While Andrea was in Hawaii for work, she learned about the wildfires through news reports. She immediately contacted her parents, urging them to evacuate. Initially reluctant due to past experiences with fires, they eventually complied after persistent encouragement from Andrea. They safely reached the Santa Monica Pier and later checked into a hotel in Marina Del Ray. Unfortunately, they had to leave behind essential items like medications and important documents. Friends of Andrea’s son Jakob visited the site and sent pictures showing the extent of the damage. Among the ruins, the chimney of a fireplace built by Michael stood as a poignant reminder of the family’s resilience and craftsmanship.

Although the family has lost everything material, they are thankful for each other's safety. The emotional toll on Andrea and her children, Misha and Jakob, is significant, especially given the added stress of disrupted schooling due to the fires. As they navigate this challenging period, the community has rallied around them, with a GoFundMe campaign set up to assist in their recovery efforts. Amidst the ashes, the family finds solace in the support they receive and looks forward to rebuilding their lives in the place they once called home.
