In a significant development for public broadcasting in Southern Illinois, Larry D. Hunter has been appointed as the interim executive director of WSIU Public Broadcasting Service. Larry D. Hunter's journey in media began more than thirty years ago, marking him as an industry veteran. After graduating from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in December 1983, he started his career as an account executive at WDDD Radio Broadcasting in Marion. His professional trajectory includes a notable stint as an account executive at WSIL-TV from 1990 to 2019. In his current position, Hunter leverages his extensive experience to lead WSIU into a new era of public service. Jeff Harmon, SIU’s chief communications and marketing officer, highlighted Hunter's suitability for the role due to his profound connections within Southern Illinois and his dedication to public media.

Beyond his professional achievements, Hunter resides in Carterville with his wife, Pamm, and they have two grown children. Under his leadership, WSIU continues to serve over 5 million people across seven states through its various channels, including digital television, radio stations, a website, and social media platforms. The station also operates the Southern Illinois Radio Information Service (SIRIS), which assists individuals who are blind or unable to read, further emphasizing its commitment to inclusivity and community support.
