WVU World Music Program Set to Amaze with Spring Concert Extravaganza
2025-03-27

An exciting musical journey awaits audiences as the West Virginia University World Music program gears up for its eagerly anticipated spring concert. Scheduled for April 4th at the Canandy Creative Arts Center in Morgantown, this event promises a vibrant celebration of global sounds and rhythms. Performances will include captivating renditions from the African Music and Dance Ensemble, invigorating steel bands, and the enchanting Balinese Gamelan. A highlight of the evening will be the premiere of "The Barn Swallows," an innovative composition by Andrew Kohn, a distinguished professor at the WVU School of Music.

Inspired by nature's grace, Kohn crafted "The Barn Swallows" after observing the fluid movements of these agile birds. Drawing upon his deep understanding of traditional Balinese gamelan music, particularly the dynamic Gamelan Kebyar style, he infused the piece with elements that transcend cultural boundaries. The composition incorporates a segment adapted from a work by Messiaen, which itself mimics the morning symphony of birdsong, alongside a spontaneous drum solo that adds an element of surprise and excitement to the performance.

This two-hour spectacle offers flexibility with dual starting options to enhance audience enjoyment. Attendees opting for the earlier session at 6 p.m. will start their evening in the Gladys G. Davis Theatre before transitioning to the Douglas O. Blaney Lobby for additional performances and refreshments. Alternatively, those choosing the 7 p.m. entry will begin their experience in the Blaney Lobby before concluding in the Davis Theatre. Accessible pricing makes this cultural extravaganza available to all, with special rates for younger attendees, older community members, and group bookings. This concert not only showcases the rich diversity of world music but also fosters a deeper appreciation for cross-cultural artistic expression, inspiring both performers and listeners alike.
